Hello,

I have recently installed the proprietary video codecs for OpenSuse 10.3/KDE.

For some reason, after a while (anything from a few minutes to a few hours), and without notice, the picture gets replaced with colourful, multifarious noise like this:

The audio continues unabated. The "timeline" progresses as it should.

There isn't much of a discernible pattern of cause and effect. However, I've noticed that when I pause the video, go away long enough for my screensaver to come on and return, it happens.

This occurs with all proprietary container formats/codecs :mp4, avi, etc. The problem doesn't go away when I restart Kaffeine/Xine. A reboot is necessary to temporarily fix the problem. What is happening? How can this be prevented?

Regards,

I would check for a hardware problem first. It could be a memory fault or a faulty video card. Memtest86+ can be used to check memory.

An IBM article discussing hardware diagnosis.

GRML - LiveCD distro for hardware detection and testing.
