Hello everyone.

I am still kind of new to linux, so take it easy with me

After following this guide to remove Beagle:http://www.suseforums.net/index.php?...dpost&p=232094
I cannot start XMMS anymore.

When I use the console, this is what I get:
Code:
XX@XXXX:~> xmms
/usr/lib64/xmms/Effect/libstenh.so: undefined symbol: _ZN3fv36stenh_10setBPF_LPF******
Ed
impulser2.cpp: init: 1 slot(s)
impulser2.cpp: store_inf: sf_open: Couldn't load ""

Segmentation fault

Dies ist wahrscheinlich ein Fehler in XMMS.
Siehe http://bugs.xmms.org zum Ausfüllen eines Fehlerreports.

Speicherzugriffsfehler
XX@XXXX:~>
At Bugs.xmms.org all I get is a PROXY ERROR
The board athttp://forum.xmms.org/ is also down

After searching the forum and not finding any help,I tried to reinstall XMMS with all dependencies through YAST, but it didn't help. Should I completely remove it, reboot and reinstall like I had to do to the "problem" programs in windows??

Any help would be appreciated as I already miss my internet radio

Don't know if the Beagle uninstall is related at all. Just for your information, xmms is being removed from Debian Testing's distribution today. That's usually a sign that they can't get the thing to work properly over there. I know this is OpenSUSE, but sometimes everyone gets the same newer libraries that break certain programs. And newer programs are more important to the future than the kind of legacy program that xmms is these days. There are alternatives that are still currently being developed.

I think the newer xmms was beep, which has been forked again to audacious. That's if you want to stay with the same sort of interface, but I would think there are other players that can get the streaming you want going again.

Welcome to the forum, Deca!

You may wish to consider giving Amarok a test-drive. That is what I use for all of my Internet radio and streams. I have no problems. I do not think the Beagle removal was the culprit, but sorry if it was. I find my system to run smoother with Beagle tossed to the curb.

Make sure you get the Amarok version from the Packman repository. Also, be sure to manually upgrade the "yauap" package, since it has to be done through YaST. That saves you from the Amarok update notice if you use the openSUSE Updater applet. I suggest doing your updates manually and turning off the applet. Good luck, and please post back with your results.

Well I didn't thimk that the Beagle removal really had anything to do with it either, but it just "broke" after I removed it...

I guess I will give Amorak a try if Xmms is being dropped from the other distro. I just used it as it was the "winamp clone" that I was used to.

Thanks for the reinsurance that I didn't break it :-) And yes, the system does run better w/o Beagle.

Rename your ~/.xmms folder and then try to start it again.

Hi McQueen,

Now I have an ~/.xmm~ and an ~/.xmms folder and still the same error. As I just installed Amorak and got it up and running, I am going to dump Xmms now for good.

Thanks anyway.

Just as an update to this, I notice that Debian is now accepting into Testing (Lenny) something called xmms2. I haven't a clue of specifics as I'm using OpenSUSE but apparently xmms is still alive in some way.

Nothing wrong with using Amarok, Banshee, Rhythmbox, or others. One of the advantages of free software is all the choices available and at times all the forks of those choices. It can get confusing though. Just pick the one that does what you need in a way acceptable to you, the user. OpenSUSE comes with Amarok in the default KDE and Banshee in the default Gnome desktop installations and both of those do streaming fine with the proper codecs installed. Use Packman for that. Usually his versions of the players and libxine1, win32codecs-all, and gstreamer plugins get more of the popular formats going.

If you really like XMMS I would go with audacious instead. It is being actively developed and will accept winamp skins just like XMMS. Amarok is great but it has a rather large footprint when compared to other similar proggys. Just depends on what you like and enjoy.....
