Hi friends,

This is my first topic so I'm don't know how things work around here.
I"ve been using openSUSE for nearly a year now so I can say I'm quite familiar with Linux.

I've been trying to install VLC Multimedia Player for quite a while now, but I won't work.

I have downloaded a prepackaged rpm of version 0.8.6e. I've tried to install it using yast2, but that won't work due to missing dependencies. After yast2, I tried to install it using the Terminal.

This is what it tells me:

dhcppc0:/home/francois.rwa # rpm -Uvh /home/francois.rwa/Downloads/programmas/vlc/vlc-0.8.6e-1.pm.0.i586.rpm

I started to install dependencies, but they all have dependencies, so it's beginning to become my mission impossible.

I hope y'all can help me!
Thanks in advance,
Roel from The Netherlands

I find the easiest way to install VLC is to add Packman to your software package manager repository and also remove VideoLAN site from your repository, and install the Packman packaged version of VLC. Your software package manager should automatically sort the dependencies for you.

Thanks, but it doesn't work. I deleted the VLC repo and tried to install again, but yast2 tells me its missing 77 (!) dependencies.
How is that possible? On my old laptop, also running openSUSE 10.3, I never had such problems.

Do you have Packman as a repository? If so, forget the version of VLC you downloaded, and use the Packman version of VLC.

Also, are the rest of your repositories working?

I also assume you are not mixing 32-bit up with 64-bit?

I've deleted the downloaded version.

I have also added the Packman repository, found on the openSUSE website, as an installation source.
It certainly works.

I've tried yast2 again, but it still tells me it's missing 77 dependencies.

Isn't there by any chance a repository that provides all those missing dependencies?

Thanks, bye

If you have your software package manager set up correctly, this should all happen automatically. Installation should be a breeze.

IMHO you have a problem with your software package manager, and what you are seeing with vlc is just a symptom of another problem.

I don't use YaST for this (I use the Smart software package manager) so I can't help you there. If you decide to try and use Smart, please advise, and I can give you a URL that will help you set it up properly, and quickly, making this install easy.

Ok, I've decided to try Smart. I wanted to install it but it needs 9 dependencies.. I'm going to install them manually. I hope it'll work.
I'll let you know

Thanks

If you are using openSUSE-10.3, then I strongly recommend you install smart following the commands in this blog article of yaloki (guru):
http://dev-loki.blogspot.com/2007/10/smart...ensuse-103.html

He has to be one of the most knowledgeable openSUSE users, and this is the method I use for openSUSE-10.3

Note: the Novell/SuSE version of Smart is not adequate. You need to install the version that you will get by following Guru/yaloki's blog.

Hi again,

I've followed Guru/yaloki's blog and installing smart worked. Then, I tried to install VLC.
I got this message:
gpg failed to import keyid dc87d14a3ab2ce5e, please make sure that gpg is installed, that the keyserver subkeys.pgp.net is working and that the package /var/lib/smart/packages/a52dec-0.7.4-3.pm.3.i586.rpm has a valid signature.

I have installed gpg, so I'm stuck again..

Hope you can help me again!
Thanks

Sometimes the key server PC is slow. The easiest thing to do is simply try again.

If you are behind a corporate firewall, I've known them to block the port where the keyserver info is copied thru, but I suspect that is not the case for you, ... but more likely the keyserver PC is simply slow when you tired.

The following commands all require root permissions (so type "su" first, followed by root password, in a konsole):

If you are curious as to what your key server is, you can type:
<span style="font-family:Courier New">smart config --set remove-packages=false</span>
and the rpms will be kept under /var/lib/smart/packages

Edit:
You could also try installing "rpmkey-packman" to see if that helps with your key problem, ... but I suspect this is simply a slow keyserver when you tried.
