Thread: Audacity Broken In 10.2

I had Audacity working before in 10.2 and it was no problem.
I upgraded to 10.3 and had nothing but misery so I went back down to 10.2 with a fresh format etc so it was clean install.
For the life of me I cannot make Audacity work.
I am continually getting the error:
Error while opening sound device. Please check the output device settings and the project sample rate.

    I have installed:
Audacity 1.3.4-2.pm.beta which is what packman sites are offering up (WHY beta software guys?)
then I deleted the .audacity files from the user and went back to version 1.2.4b-55 from the opensuse source and it gave same errors.
It defaults to OSS /dev/dsp which I don't seem to be able to locate OSS via YaST so have tried every alsa setting in the list to no avail. (which is miserable waiting each time for the S L O W response of changing preferences).
I noted it said Using Portaudio v19
I had PortAudio18 AND 20 loaded for some reason, so I dumped them both and FINALLY found a version 19 RPM to install. It forced me to ALSO install version 18 and it's -devel file.

I'm completely at a loss and getting more and more confused. I just don't understand. I've used Audacity for a couple of years with various SuSE versions and I have never once before had it throw any errors after installing.
Can anyone help me fix this mess??

    Thanks for your suggestion.
I found an rpm for alsa-oss online although it wasn't listed in YaST specifically, but I found it and installed it.
Deleted user audacity files again, retried.
    No change.
    I'm so disappointed by this.
Any more help is truly appreciated.

Have you put this error into google and done a search for it? For example here:
    http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.p...e=Linux_Issues

    * If you receive this error:

"Error opening sound device. Please check the input device settings and the Project Sample Rate" or "Please check the output device settings and the Project Sample Rate"

even when no other device is using the sound card, and your permissions are correct, it simply means there's a problem with your Audacity settings. You may have a sample rate selected that your sound card does not support. You can alter this by changing the Project Rate at the bottom left of the Audacity window. If you receive the "check the input device settings" message, try setting the "recording channels" in the Audio I/O tab of Preferences to mono or stereo, and if you are recording something playing on the computer, turn off "software playthrough". [/b]
That suggests to me you need to check your permissions. Failing that, check your audacity settings.

There are many other hits one gets with google if one types the error message in the google 'search bar'. One of them may have your solution.

OK, then I recommend you remove alsa-oss. No sense in adding another unknown to the equation.

Thanks for the linkk to the audacity wiki.
It's still not working but maybe I am on the trail of it...
I think the problem lies with my SuSE installation.
/dev/dsp it shows to be a link to /dev/dsp0 but there is no file or folder called /dev/dsp0.
/dev/dsp indicates that it is a link with filetype “unknown” and shows to be pointed to pointed to /dev/dsp0 (unknown).

I have no idea how to "fix" this file structure so that it is normal.
Also know that other sound players will work when called on but I don't have anything running already that I know of.

Can anyone help me with how to fix the /dev/dsp structure??
I have googled that in an attempt to help myself and I don't see anything helpful after paging through many pages there. I'm not a "high level user" and a lot of what I read there applies to Ubuntu, Debian or makes no sense at all to me.
