Hello Everyone...Im new to Linux,

and Cinelerra has got a problem with my Opensuse10.3 GNOME compizfusion-activ(nvidia) installation.
http://www.heroinewarrior.com/cinelerra.php3
http://cv.cinelerra.org/about.php

I have installed Cinelerra through Yast from PackMan.
Package-name: cinelerra-2.1.cv1036-0.pm.1.i586.rpm
There are dependencies within Cinelerra? I think I have met them. Maybe not all. ^^
The Problem?
The whole GUI of Cinelerra doesnt work.
The Program starts up and I can click through the "Tip of the day" window...closing it, but thats all no other window
can be interacted with.

The console output:
Quote:
user@user:~> cinelerra
Cinelerra 2.1CV SVN r1036 Packman build © 2006 Heroine Virtual Ltd.
Internal ffmpeg
Compiled on Thu Oct 11 19:03:53 UTC 2007

Cinelerra is free software, covered by the GNU General Public License,
and you are welcome to change it and/or distribute copies of it under
certain conditions. There is absolutely no warranty for Cinelerra.
FileSystem::update /usr/lib/cinelerra/mpeg2enc.plugin: file or directory not found
MWindow::init_plugins: /usr/lib/cinelerra cant open directory
[/b]
There is nothing else I can tell you for now.

A Question:
Can I fast check if I really met all dependencies for a special program?
Im a little overloaded with all that I learned in the past days...maybe you can help me to get cinelerra running?

It sounds like its a great program...hmmm.

Is there anyone who could install cinelerra on opensue10.3 without further problems?

OK, I installed Cinelerra from Packman, after reading your post, and I encountered a similar problem.

Possibly a permissions issue? You could send an email to the Packman packager.

In the mean time why don't you try out "kdenlive". It doesn't have as many features as Cinelerra, but I find it still pretty good for features, and its IMHO much more intuitive for using:

Thanks for testing Cinelerra on your machine.

Tried Kdenlive and it worked. But its only a very basic editor other than Cinelerra.
Kdenlive and the other available editors beside Cinelerra arent really interesting to me.
But thanks, for basic stuff, having at least the ability to edit movies its ok. ^^

I hope the problem wont occur in the next release of Cinelerra.

5 Years further into the future and the freesoftware Cinelerra will be useable. lol

Basically im a gamer...testing once a while how far Linux can replace things I do in windows(xp).
Linux for gamers would be great...a free platform, only games have to be bought.
But as I can remember...MS DOS was easier to use than Linux for games.

Hmmm... what type of editing are you trying? I typically use avidemux to process my videos, and chop them up into reasonably small pieces. Then I use kdenlive (or if dvbcut) to chop them to exact frames. ...

What version of kdenlive did you try? There is a massive difference between the current packman v.1.6svn and the older v.1.4 of kdenlive. Massive.

That should read betwen the packaman v.0.6svn (labeled as 0.5 but actually 0.6svn) and the older v.0.4 of kdenlive.

The differences are in:
a. improved stability, and
b. better transitions,
c. more video compatibility,
d. improved still image compatibility
.... and other aspects....

Try running it without Compiz. I have it running on OpenSuse 10.3 64 Bit under KDE windowmanager and it seems to be running very well for me. Hope you get it running though because it is such a great video editor and I have been having a lot of fun with it as well.

Just wanted to note that I also have the same problem as the original post. I tried running it under KDE (w/o Compiz) and, Fluxbox. As well as changing ownership and permissions... So far nothing...

Hope you guys find a solution!

Ditto here, and unfortunately, kdenlive (which I was impressed with before, and used to edit small videos) now has some weird a/v sync issues for me.

At least I finally found out the kino can import mpegs, with no guarantees. However, it worked fine for me, and is usually what I import home movies and do major edits with (like chopping out large blocks of useless video).

Would be nice to get fixed, but I'm not holding my breath on either one...

I still have the same "problem" cinelerra. But my not being a cinelerra user, this doesn't annoy me.

Reference cutting out large chunks of useless video from an mpeg file, I find the program "dvbcut" does that very nicely.

I have not needed tight audio/video-synchronization with mixed audio/video with kdenlive, as I typically apply a musical sound track to my videos. But in cases where there is desynch, I often find its related to the software (in this case kdenlive) unable to handle a certain audio/video combination, or one has a slightly non-standard frame rate (such as 30fps instead of 29.97 fps). In cases like that I will first convert the video to precisely 29.97 with an audio/video mix that kdenlive can handle better. ... and converting to a format kdenlive can handle better also helps.

You could try taking your initial video (with a synchronized audio track), and converting an .avi to an .avi that kdenlive can handle with "xvidenc" or in the case of an mpeg converting it to a mpeg that kdenlive can handle with "tovid".
xvidenc: http://xvidenc.sourceforge.net/
tovid: http://packman.links2linux.de/package/tovid

In both cases there are rpms for suse.

I ran strace on cinelerra and it hung at a "FUTEX_WAIT". So, I thought I'd try to submit a bug report. There most people report the output of gdb. I run "gdb cinelerra" -> run. But, it now doesn't hang - I can load clips, etc. Pretty lame way to get it to work, huh? Your mileage may vary.
