Hey
I know these should be posted on winehq.org but wanted to field them here first; I am having a problem with my Wine install but as it is rather old now (0.9.44) I want to try upgrading to the latest build and compile from source code. My question is, by un-installing WINE, will I loose all my installed programs, saved games etc etc, or is there a folder I should backup then restore once the new version is installed? Cheers all |

you can back up the .wine folder in your user home if you want. I'm pretty sure that uninstalling wine does not delete any of your old settings and programs, though.
OTOH, I'm not sure how uninstalling and re-installing wine affects the registry |

hmm, i would guess backing up the .wine folder should do the trick; afterall, the drive_c\Windows folder is in there. What the heck if I loose some high-scores/game progress, gives me a good excuse why I should play the games some more (plus, my mrs has a high score on chuzzle i can not beat so I may at least stand a chance if that happens hehe!)

I have installed and reinstalled Wine several times, and nothing gets lost. You would think that if Wine were truly uninstalled, all the info the "registry" would be lost, but somehow all my programs and program setting all work exactly the same as they did with the previous version. I always check the version of Wine afterward to make sure that I don't still have the old version, but I always have the new version.
??? Backing up Wine should be really easy, just copy the entire wine folder to your desktop or somewhere convenient. |
