I have been playing this game quite a bit in WINE and thought I would install it in Windows to see how it compared. It seemed slow, clunky and jerky to me.

I guess it seems that WINE is really making progress if it can run a program like Quake III better than Windows.

Additionally, Photoshop seems to run faster, though some features still don't work quite right.

Good job WINE crew!

It may be the superior Linux OS underneath, managing the memory and filesystem better.

I was thinking additionally that WINE is essentially like a stripped down version of Windows if you were able to somehow stop all the useless services running in the background, so this may help the performance as well.

The supercharged quake engine I ran at one time, upgraded gfx etc., would give 4-7 times the fps of windows.

Quake 3 runs on Linux natively, far much faster than on Windows or through Wine

I've heard this before.

I think the fact that Quake was originally developed in openGL has something to do with it.
