So I am using Linux-gamers guide to installing steam. I get the error that only one instance of steam can be run at a given time at 26 % update. the guide tells me to ..

.Q: Steam crashes at 26% of the update with a "Sharing violation"

Run the following command in the console (substitute the path to steam executables with your path)

*
wine SteamTmp.exe SelfUpdate "CProgram Files\Steam\Steam.exe" 14

well I am confused by this in a few ways.

A. am i suppose to compensate for my file being a .msi by changing all the .exe's to .msi?

B.for some reason it was very hard to look into the c drive.so i ran a search on steam.exe and game up with file:///home/steve/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Steam/Steam.exe when i put this insto where the qoutes are

it gives me the error "wine could not load L"c\windows\\system32\\steamtmp.exe" Module not found"

any help would be nice.

i've never messed with steam so I an just using some common experience. Running steam off of your windows hard drive may/may not work, what you need to do is get your install file or cd and run the installer in wine, so that the game install on your linux drive/partition. i have had errors similar to that before. correct me if i am wrong but suse only reads windows files ,but doesn't modify them or write new files, which in a sense disables any updater and is why you get the sharing error. Anyway just run steam setup in WINE and see if that doesn't correct you're problem.

Ok well I have solved the problem.

To fix this you must go to the folder that steam was installed into, for me it was /home/steve/.wine/drive_c/ program files/steam and pressing f4 on the keyboard. this will bring up the terminal. then type in "nice -n 19 wine steam.exe. this should launch the updater without the pause at 26%. note: to veiw hidden files goto view>show hidden files in konqueror.
