Thumbs up

Hi,

I'm trying to install WoW on linux using wine, but for some reason I can't see the "Installer.exe" file on the DVD. I loaded the DVD on my win2k virtual machine and I can see the file. After checking the permission of this file in windows, it's hidden and/or protected. In windows I tried to copy it from the DVD to my C drive but the operation was not allowed.

"show hidden files" in the konqueror doesn't work because this is not a linux hidden file, i.e. .wine, .cshrc, .bashrc, etc.. Is there truly a way to hide a file in windows so you cannot see it in linux! Surely I hope not...

Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated. Even just to say you've seen the problem before... I don't want to feel alone ;-)

Happy Holidays!

CD/DVD filesystems don't support the type of granular ACL's that would prevent you from accessing a file (although they may be casually hidden unless you specifically look for it). The fact that you were unable to copy the file in virtual Win is suspect. It could be that the disk is simply bad ("Operation not permitted" can unintuitively indicate a media problem) or there is some sort of funky DRM involved. Most game CD/DVDs utilize some sort of copy protection that generally involves breaking the ISO standard and doing funny things with the drive to access data, this generally prevents copying of the CD's.

Having said all that, I'm not really a gamer, and I don't play WoW, so I'm just offering a third-party perspective on your situation.

You could try taking a look at this wiki for pointers, looks like it has some good info, and yet nothing to indicate that you shouldn't be seeing install.exe. There is an option to download the file directly from blizzard, or to install it within Windows proper and then use that program folder from linux, might be worth a shot...?

Anyways, hope this maybe helps...

Cheers,
KV

Then you need to mount the cd-rom nohide. See 'man mount' or
