ok, here's the output for glxgears:

20042 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4008.400 FPS
20548 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4109.600 FPS

20550 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4110.000 FPS
20548 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4109.600 FPS
20549 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4109.800 FPS
20551 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4110.200 FPS
20550 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4110.000 FPS

Looks like your GLX is up and running, but either SDL isn't able to initialize the GLX layer, or the driver is malfunctioning. Try the following, in this order to see if it fixes anything:

1) Reinstall all "SDL" packages you have installed
2) Reinstall all "glx" packages you have installed
3) Reinstall the ATI drivers

Try them one at a time, and hope that one of 'em fixes it.

Ok, went into YaST, removed the SDL packages that were checked.. and then reinstalled them.
Bingo! Q4 fired up
