Maybe I'm just lucky. I still wish I had known enough to buy an Nvidia. I can't justify replacing a working card, though. My wife has no sense of humor for such things.

Darkelve,

Well, you mentioned it, so I'm back here asking for help.

I bought 9.2 Pro last weekend, and want to try to drive my SONY LapTop from 2D to 3D.

The chipset that I have is the ATI Mobility Radeon 9200. Based upon comments here in this Forum I should be able to do this.

Over at the ATI site @ http://www.ati.com/support/drivers/linux/r...=5&submit=GO%21
I have several choices of what to download. I've downloaded the check.sh script, but cannot get it to run to let me know what version of XFree86 that is on my box. I've done this often enough in the past, but it just doesn't seem to want to let me know what I've got on board here. Hmm...

If I can download the best version of the new ATI SuSE drivers how would you recommend that I do this -- through a site with an .rpm package e.g. http://www.k-files.de/download.php?s=&acti...tails&dlid=1618, which I found in my Googling and use YaST, or via apt get?

Or should I try to go another route?

Adler

Try this:
Code:
more /var/log/XFree86.0.0.log
It may have slightly different numbering in the .0.0 section, but this will tell you what version of Xfree you're running. I still stand by the several posts I've made indicating that you should use the SUSE version and follow the instructions, but it's your choice. I have no experience with 9.2 so can't help you there. If you've read the SUSE instructions you'll know how to install it. I highly doubt that you can do it with apt. I think you're making this much more complicated than it needs to be by attempting to introduce several different unproven methods of getting your card working, but again, your choice.

anthro398,

You are probably right in that I am making this too complex.

Given my scenario and 9.2 Pro, give it me, what I should do. TIA

Adler, you can't determine your version of XFree86 on the 9.2 OS because it does not run XFree86, it runs the latest Xorg version. The current ATI drivers will not work with the latest xorg version 6.8. I learned on this forum that this has been discussed at length at rage3d. I checked it out, sure enough, no go on xorg 6.8.

oops. sorry about that. I remember reading that now. In fact, that's why my 9.2 disks are still sitting in my desk drawer and I'm still playing Quake 3 Multiplayer on 9.1.

harryc,

Hey, thanks.

I was wondering why a simple shell script command wasn't working to let me know what I was running. I thought I'd missed something whereas I've done this often enough before. Dah?

I've got the other post going and the rest of the crew here are just settling into 9.2, so I expect relief here soon.

As I mentioned this is sort of a hobby for me getting 3D going on my LapTop.

If you hear anything more please do pass it on.
