So I boot fine with compiz enabled with xgl and everything is fine until I try to run any program. When i try to open a program the screen turns white (woo...). What is going on here?

My laptop is a vaio sz240 with geforce go 7400.

It seems that the latest compiz updates are to blame but has anyone been able to correct this problem?

Sometimes running these commands as root will do the trick when using NVidia chipsets:

# nvidia-xconfig --composite
# nvidia-xconfig --allow-glx-with-composite
# nvidia-xconfig --render-accel
# nvidia-xconfig --add-argb-glx-visuals

If you have the compiz-fusion icon running there is also an Compiz option 'Indirect Rendering' that you can try.
