In the openSUSE repositories there are tons of "debuginfo" packages for different programs.

Example:
The Packman repository contains lyx-1.5.2-0.pm.2.i586.rpm and it also contains lyx-debuginfo-1.5.2-0.pm.2.i586.rpm

What is the significance of these debug packages? Are they meant only for developers?

I realize my haste in asking this question. YaST clearly explains that the "debuginfo" packages are not needed, but only useful when the application is not functioning correctly.
