Hi all,

Just installed OpenSuse 10.3 yesterday and I'm still in the midst of setting up my environment. I know compiz/beryl will work on this system, because I have a live CD that it works flawlessly on. That said, I can't seem to get it up and running on openSuse. Here are some details about my system:

Quote:
crash_x@Pnet-mediahost:~> fglrxinfo
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI Radeon 9550 / X1050 Series
OpenGL version string: 2.0.6849 Release[/b]
Now, no matter how hard I try, I can't seem to get XGL to work, and hence no compositing on this system. I have tried to get AIGLX to work, although that may be futile, and while X still loads, it seems to run sluggishly, fglrxinfo returns an error, and compositing still fails to work.

I have also tried the "radeon" driver, but again, without success.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!
Andrew

With ATI, I think you have to use XGL. To use XGL, install it though YaST (although it may well be installed already), and then enable it with the command

gnome-xgl-switch --enable-xgl

This must be run in superuser mode (type su in the command line), and it work for gnome and KDE.

I tried this, but it didn't work. When I enable XGL using gnome-xgl-switch, I reboot my machine and then X fails to load....

There is another way to do it. Disable XGL by running gnome-xgl-switch --disable-xgl, then go into yast-->system-->/etc/sysconfig editor. I don't know where it is in 10.3, but there is an option in there which is set by default to "Xorg". Find it, and change it to XGL.

Sorry I can't be more specific, I'm at work, on a Windows machine.

There are two options that reference XGL:

DISPLAYMANAGER_XSERVER
DISPLAYMANAGER_XGL_XOPTS

Any idea which I should mess with?

Update:

It seems that you're talking about XSERVER. I will set it to XGL and see what happens.

Hi,

I have an ATI Radeon 9550. I performed the installation via Yast. I also tried to do the installation by downloading and compiling the driver myself, but when I booted back into GNOME, Yast complained that I had 2 mandatory updates. It then overwrote my work with its own, more recent package...

Thanks!

Andrew
