16 Bit Vs 24 Bit Graphics

Lately, I have been having difficulties configuring X through Sax2. Is there really much difference between 16 bit and 24bit graphics? Does it really make a difference?

all i know about 16 and 24 bit graphics is that 16 bit is like 60000 colors or somthing adn 24 bit is like 16.7 million colors
i dont know if thats the only difference or not
