I went into Regional & Accessibility > Keyboard Shortcuts > Command Shortcuts tab > Multimedia > Audio Player > Amarok and clicked on the shortcut designation button thing. I then hit the key on my keyboard which I wanted to act as the shortcut (keyscan code 226). The text 'XF86AudioMedia' appeared in the box. I clicked 'apply'. I hit the button I had just supposedly tied with Amarok and... nothing happened. How do I determine why?

Right click on the K menu -> Menu Editor
Choose Amarok and assign the "shortcut key" (bottom of the window) by pressing the button you want.

It still doesn't work. Amarok doesn't load. The PC doesn't seem to even acknowledge the button-press. I know it's capable of doing so because it detects it in the Menu Editor and in 'showkey' at the terminal.

Looking into it (thanks).

In the meantime, could someone tell me why showkey command, run as root (doesn't run as user) gives me different keycodes from xev?
