From some time ago, I noticed a quite strange behavior in my SuSE box (openSuSE 10.1). If I boot in graphical mode (init 5) I get gdm and can login with any user, but can't switch between virtual terminals (Ctrl-Alt F1, F2...) They seem to not exist.
What is worse for me, if I boot in text mode (init 3) or if X server crashes, I get the usual login prompt, but when I try to login (as normal user or root) it reports "Error in services module" (maybe not that exact message, translated from spanish) and kicks me back to the login prompt.
I have two possible origins for my problem, but I'm not sure if any of them is: first I upgraded my X server to Xorg 7.2. This may be not the problem, because since then I'm pretty sure I remember being able to login in text mode. The other possible trouble is that I ran out of space in my root partition (I have a root one and a home one) so I backed it up to another one bigger, made necessary changes in /etc/fstab /boot/grub/menu.lst and so on, and got it to work. While trying to get some space to be able to make the backup, I deleted the content of /var/log, (I now know it wasn't a great idea) and some apps have complained about the lack of a /var/log/some_app_dir (which I create again as fast as I can). So I suspect maybe that "services module" or whatever it is maybe is related to it... I know I give you too little info, but first of all, I expect you to point me in what direction I can look for trouble identification.
By the way, since the upgrade to X.org 7.2, I noticed a very strange behavior in some apps. I am not able to use spanish special characters in some of them, like openoffice.org or firefox, but I can in any other app (let's say kwrite, kedit...). I am even able to copy/paste those characters from kedit to firefox, for example, but not directly writing them. Any hints about it? (my whole system is configured with Spain's spanish [es_ES]).
Well, any help is surely apreciated.
Thanks in advance.

So, news here. Seems like my virtual terminals are back, but still can't login "Error in services module".

Any help?

Ok. Solved right now.
So, after almost driving myself crazy, I found what was wrong. When I deleted the contents of the /var/log dir (stupid, stupid, stupid) I wiped the /var/log/lastlog file which appears to be neccesary to be able to login (surprise...). So a simple
Code:
sudo touch /var/log/lastlog
fixed my problem.
If someone gets to this, maybe this can help him/her.
So, the lesson today is "Children, don't delete system logs without being quite sure of what you are doing".
Thanks, I'll be hitting my head against a wall.
