a. insufficient hard drive space, or b. you ARE behind a proxy, even though you don't think so (maybe setup by your ISP ?? ), c. there is something very flakey about your Internet connection that is impacting smart (even though you don't notice it with other applications). My guess is item-c. Perhaps you could read up on this a bit, and see what you can do to tweak your internet connection. |

a: impossible, as I have mentioned previously. No partition has less than 3GB.
b: I am told that this is not the case, c: this is beyond me. All I can say is that I have had to disable ipv6 before, by implementing manuals that have been recommended (by guys like you at this forum), to the best of my ability. So do we call it quits then? Please note my above mentioning of DHCP, if you haven't already. |

Reference stopping on this, ... sometimes if confronted with a problem, I will stop for a week or more, ... and then come back to it after some time with a fresh mind, and can then occasionally solve it. You could adopt that approach, and keep in the back of your mind the possibility that some parameter is not configured nominally in your Internet setup..... perhaps sometime in the near future that will twig as to either some value you changed, or some other application that also appears to be suffering under the internet. Maybe that will provide a hint. Good luck. |

I suppose there is no reason why my ISP should not have put me behind a proxy, and I will attempt to find a straightforward method of checking this. Thank you for you help, I will be checking back here in a week's time (roughly). I will be away for a week in early August, though, so please do not be surprised when I disappear at this time. However, the concept of "some parameter is not configured nominally" is of little relevance to me, as I presume there are numerous settings re: connection (I had never heard of ipv6 before coming here). I regret to say that to be so vague will be of little help in the forseeable future.

Hi oldcpu, I now believe it is about a week since we were on this topic. If you have struck gold, I would be grateful if you could put it here.

There is something bizarre with your setup that is causing your downloads of repository lists to stop after x% or so. Until you sort that out, there is nothing I can do. |

wobblerhaha.
When you downloaded SUSE, did you check the md5 sums before you burned the images to disks? With the number of issues that you have had, I wonder if you just installed from bad ISO files. |

No, I didn't Wilson. This was because I simply bought a DVD of ebay, which was a lot less hassle than downloading and burning. Most of my issues have been connected to the internet some way, virtually everything else worked perfectly fine - except webcams on Kopete talking to MSN protocol (which I have not updated to the latest version of KDE) and my whoopsie with xgl, largely because I am working with an apparently impossible graphics card.
In other words, I think the problem may be internet related, and less to do with a bad disc. It would be nice to test that theory via another connection, but unfortunately there are no unprotected wifi networks where I am, which wouldn't be honest anyway. |

Now, we have a little bit of movement. "network unreachable" on "download.opensuse.org" and "temporary failure in name resolution".

wobblerhaha, run this;
Code:
smart channel --show I'll bet it has nothing to do with your ISP or DHCP, but the channels. Based on the url you showed above http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/...s/media.1/media this would be a yast2 repo, and must be designated as such. Where as this http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/.../openSUSE_10.2/ is rpm-md or, to keep things the same, this is another example of rpm-md http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/.../repo/oss/suse/ notice the differences. Secondly, if your going to use yast2 it should be http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/...on-oss/media.1/ not http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/...s/media.1/media You would do well to use rpm-md since suse is moving toward rpm-md. rpm-md is rpm metadata, which is a compressed xml file. Here is one of my howto's http://wiki.suselinuxsupport.de/wikka.php?...tPackageManager I also wrote the howto on smart's home page http://labix.org/smart which can be found here http://labix.org/smart/howto |
