In a console, type "su" to get root permissions, and then type:
smart channel --show
and please post the output here.

Yes. Sorry if this is dragging somewhat - I will attempt again later. Perhaps someone else who speaks [whatever language Konsole uses] as their native language could tell me if it has been done properly.

Sorry. Timed out again, although progress bar did reach 75%.[/b]
A lack of hard drive partition space in "/" would also cause this. I assume you are not down to your "last legs" in free space.

/ comprises 3.6 GB free. Fitting Windows AND Linux onto a modest 40 GB may have been something of a squeeze (a power user may not like only 15 to play around in), but I have quite sufficient space for the meantime.

Are you doing this from the GUI, or from the Konsole?

If doing this from the GUI, try instead from the Konsole. Make certain NO OTHER instances of SMART, nor of YAST Software Package Manager (nor any other software packager manager, including the basic rpm command, and including the program PIN) are running, then in a konsole type "su" to get root permissions (and of COURSE enter the password - its sort of common sense), and then type:
smart update

Post any error messages you might get.

In addition to running "smart" from the konsole, with root permissions, note that this will also fail if you have a PC with very limited memory (256MBytes) and you are doing some other memory demanding things at the same time (to use up the available memory).

Enter password? Of course, I say that with irony. Other than checking these problems are not running simply on the bottom panel (there a proper word for this?), and control + esc I know no way of checking that these programs are not running. And from what I can see there, they are not. All I can think of is seeing the "Install/Remove Software" icon in the system tray.

Not doing anything else that I am aware of. RAM is 2GB.

I don't have a clue what this means, but apparently, I use DHCP under Windows.
