Its under /home/<user>/evolution . Burn it to CD or copy it to disk.

I was looking for it but did not see it because the files were hidden |

I've tried to backup the address book in Evolution, with the same result you're having. Being hidden, I've been unable to do so.

I've answered this question before, so I've been reluctant to jump into this thread...
To fully backup and restore Evolution data, including signatures, email account configuration, etc, you need to backup the following files and directories: --directories-- 1) ~/.evolution 2) ~/.gconf/apps/evolution --files-- 3) ~/.gnome2_private/Evolution To restore the files, run Evolution on the new machine and complete the first run wizard. Then shut down Evolution and copy the backup files to their appropriate locations. Reboot the machine or stop/restart the Evolution data server (important step). When you launch Evolution after these steps your email, contacts, tasks, and settings will be restored. As harryc has noted, make sure your user permissions are set. I usually tar my evolution components, and since I'm always the first (non-root) user on my Linux machines, when I un-tar and restore the files, the permissions are already set. |

I did get a MAJOR fright when the openSUSE-10.3 NTFS driver could not see the backup ~/.evolution, ~/.gconf/apps/evolution, and ~/.gnome2_private/Evolution on my external USB NTFS formatted hard drive. I had backed those files there earlier in the day, with the openSUSE-10.1 NTFS-3G driver. In fact, of 320 some GBytes backed up, only about 100 GBytes were visible on the external USB (NTFS formatted) drive with the openSUSE-10.3 NTFS driver. After some time of being most upset at what appeared to be a loss of 4 years of emails, and an address book built up after 4 years, it suddenly occured to me that the data was not lost, but rather it was an openSUSE-10.3 NTFS driver problem in viewing files written by 10.1's NTFS-3G 3rd party driver. I also confirmed this by Windoze XP being able to read the openSUSE-10.1 NTFS-3G written files. .... So I loaded the openSUSE-10.3 NTFS-3G driver, and used that to successfully read the external USB (NTFS formatted) device (and the 10.1 NTFS-3G written files), and I was back in business and able to copy the evolution files, and restore all my email and the 220 GBytes of missing data. So all's well that ends well, and thanks for the mini "how to" on this. |

I had always backed up only the ~/.evolution carpet but always lost my configurations files. Everyday we have something to share and learn. I'd like these easy steps to be in a howto (for newbies) explaining them how to "tar/untar" from the command line, altenatives to use the "file rolle"r instead of the command line, working with hidden files, etc. This is; off course, IMHO. I really think this would help a lot of newcomers . Kind Regards Luis |
