i copied and pasted from the wiki:

#rpm ftp://mirrors.mathematik.uni-bielefeld.de...linux/suse/apt/ SuSE/10.2-ppc base update security rpmkeys
#rpm ftp://ftp4.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt/ SuSE/10.2-ppc base update security rpmkeys

# The list with all available components can be found at:
# Some components provide experimental software, select wisely!

# Consult the link above if you want to include uri's for src rpms
repomd http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/...o/non-oss/suse/ /

the two german sites do not work and i get the following error message

but now i think i solved it this way:
i went to the rbos site, downloaded, compile and installed the apt-0.5.15lorg3.2-34.1.src.rpm sources
now it works also with repomd
however the apt4rpm version that comes default from the ppc dvd or online repository of opensuse10.2 does not work.
i also installed the apt.conf file that comes with the sources

please tell me if i did anything wrong

The only link you have working in your source list right now is the last non-oss one. The ftp4.gwdg.de is a bad link since there is no repo for 10.2-ppc or any 10.2 version anyway. As for that first link, I'm not sure that server works anymore.

after recompiling the version of apt-get from rbos that I mentioned everything works from the commandline
on my ppc machine
thus the repomd sources are recognized

however i am havin problems trying to recompile synaptic on top of it

could it be possible somehow to have also the 0.5.15lorg3.2-34.1 version of the sources of apt-libraries?

i have to say that when i recompiled on ppc the 0.5.15lorg3.2-34.1 version of apt-get i did not apply the patches that came with it.

could it depend on that?
what should i do with the files contained in the archive "apt-wrapper" that come with the sources?
is there a synaptic version already compiled for suse ppc?

Yes your repomd source is working which is the non-oss source. Every other source you have has been commented out with the # sign in front of it. As for your issues with apt, I'm not really sure there was much done with apt in 10.2 since yast and smart have come into play and imo are both much better at package management. I think that is why you are having such a hard time with synaptic.

i wished i could stick to yast, but it freaked out on me.
in fact, even if i impose the option not to refresh my on-line installation sources, every time i want to install some new packages it tries to download all of the packages list again. which are tons of megabytes of stuff.
i have a dialup connection and that is quite painful to me.

sometime ago this would not happen, but recently i got this problem and it is really bothering me.

I even reinstalled completely yast, but this problem yet persits.
Smart doesn' t work at all, either the binary version from the official distribution or recompiling it from sources.
I mean the program does not start at all.
Have you got any idea how i could fix the problem in yast?
in fact recompilation of synaptic hangs giving me errors related to some file called packagemanager.h or something like that.
Have you got any suggestions how i could fix that?

# installation_sources -s
# | Enabled | Refresh | Type | Name | URI
--+---------+---------+------+-----------------+---------------------------------------------------------
1 | Yes | No | YaST | 20070320-051253 | ftp://suse.inode.at/opensuse/distrib...10.2/repo/oss/
2 | Yes | No | YaST | 20070309-183226 | dvd:///

however, everytime i want to install some new package yast tries to connect to the on-line repository and
download once again all of the packages list.
If i let it do it next time i boot this is going to happen again
it is freaking me out

is there any file that might be broken and that i should check?
