Hello.
I just finished installing opensuse 10.2 on an imac g3. It took me a long time finding a distibution that was easy enough to install for my skill level. Everything is fine except for when I startx. Then the screen is shifted to the left. The screen resolution and graphics card utilities let me move the screen a little to the right, and I shrunk it a little to squeeze it in some, but there is still a 1 1/2 inch gap on the right, and the left is pinched off a little. When I boot up, everything is aligned right, when I am not using a gui, and just at the command prompt everything is fine. I looked on the imac itself, but don't see any manual buttons for screen position. I would appreciate any help. I'm willing to live with it if I need to. Thanks in advance, Ian |

M8 I have a similar problem in Yellow Dog 4.1 on my G4 mini. Many folks offered me sugestions & similar problems in various distros. I use an ASUS PM17TS monitor, when I boot up linux my screen is always shifted to the right. I have made a custom Xorg config. But problem still stays, to correct the issue I have to push the "auto" or turn off & on my monitor to get screen centered. Some sugested finding a better ATI graphics driver. Myself I feel its my monitor. As my nephews BENQ didnt have the issue when used on my mini. In the next week or so I plan to buy a apple cinema display & hopefully my problem will be gone. I will put a post back here as the ASUS monitor was originally purchased for an ASUS PC I have & I will be running SUSE 10.2 & XP.

I had a chance to test 10.2 last night. Well my issue with my ASUS monitor was still the same on my pc as I had on my mac in linux. Screen is shifted over to one side, but I was able to adjust with the monitor controls this time to center. So this now proves some monitors are not suitable for linux. I did have a check on the Yellow Dog sight & 4.1 is supported for a G3 iMac. Maybe you should give Yellow Dog a try.

I have since gone back to 10.1, but installing from a SAMS DVD. In the past I had issues with 10.1 and my using a diff video card from my onbard video.
Well to my surpise the issue with dule video cards was gone also the screen was centered correctly with my ASUS monitor. My copies of SUSE had been from my ISP's unmetered file server. |

Well it seems the issue lies with frequency Xorg is putting out. During install Xorg uses 60hrz, but when your system is up Xorg in SUSE linux uses 60 , 70 or 75hrz but is actually only giving you 59hrz when 60hrz is selected. Some monitor's like my ASUS have issues with non std frequency. Apple cinema displays & ATI graphics card arrangment produce issues also.
