Hello,
what do I have to do to boot into text mode? I tried "linux textmode=1", but it didn't work. I coudn't find any other way, only for x86, but none of them work on ppc.

Thank you, David

CTRL+ALT+F1 takes you to runlevel 3, which is command line. You may need to login again.

CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE kills the GUI, but X restarts instantly (usually) in this case.

Edit: Sorry, didn't notice you said 'boot' into text mode.

You may want to open YaST and then 'System' in the left menu. Go to 'System Services' (Runlevel) in the right menu, and choose 'Expert' tab. I believe you can set the runlevel, after booting, to whatever you like. But I've never tried it. Since it's set to 5, this is good bet that you can change it here.

No I don't want to boot default in text mode, the problem is that my screen turns blank after booting (when you see all the text with "done" etc.). I think it is because I forgot to test display settings during setup, so I wanted to do it from text mode. CTRL+ALT+F1 (CTRL+ALT+Fn+F1) doesn't work, neither does the second command, so I want to boot immidialtly to text mode from the bootloader, but don't know how.

Eek!

Can you put in your installation disk and boot into Rescue mode or something, or can you boot in to FailSafe mode at the bootloader menu?

try 'sudo init 3'? Although it sounds like you don't even have a shell prompt sorry, I don't know how to help more

If you are using GRUB, the easiest way is to reboot. When the grub menu appears, press F2 and then in the options line type "level 3".

I use the bootloader that comes default with Suse PPC, isn't that Lilo? I will try pressing F2, then the rescue cd. Isn't there a file wich says wich runlevel should be started? maybe I can edit that from the rescue cd.

Can't you just type 'init 3' (+ Enter/Return) as soon as the SuSe (boot) loader screen becomes visible?

You need only type the number '3' after highlighting the desired OS in grub.

The PPC version doesn't use Grub. I think dtech i right that it uses lilo, though I have never used it so I am unsure of ow to boot straight to command line from lilo.

Ahh PPC, ... GULP!! ... PPC !! ..... apologies, I should have paid more attention to the sub-forum I was in. I know nothing about PPC, so may I apologetically and humbly withdraw my recommendation.
