Hello,
i'm a somewhat-more-advanced-than-average-windows-user-who-wants-to-try-linux (so a fairly common linux starter ). I do not wan't to risk installing it on my main windows computer because it's very important to me (altough I have backups). So I installed the ppc version of suse 10.1 to my iBook dual-usb G3 700mhz with 384MB ram and an Airport card.
I like it fine, but I can't get my airport card to work. I found some guides with a specific driver (airport.o), but I can't find it anywhere.
I'm tottaly stuck, and the lack of internet really demotivates me to work in linux.
Can anyone help me with what to do?

Greetings, David

Apparently the driver you are looking for has another name...

It seems to me that "3.2 Wavelan IEEE/Orinoco, PrismII and Symbol cards" is the one you are looking for...

So I could use "orinoco-0.15rc2.tar.gz"?

How do I load it into suse?

tar.gz is a linux compression/archive format. If you are running KDE, you can typically open up konqueror (the kde file manager), right click, and select to unarchive/uncompress. It will likely create a subdirectory, possibly by the same name "orinoco-015rc2". Navigate to that subdirectory, and look for a "README.txt" file or a "INSTALL.txt" file.

The above is a standard "convention" for tarballs (affectionate name for "tar.gz" files). Unfortunately, not everyone follows the convention.

There is one thing that confuses me though...

according to the pages, this driver should be included as of kernel version 2.6.12 ...

so why didn't it recognize it your card immediately? Or perhaps I'm just misunderstanding how the inclusion of drivers in the Linux kernel(s) works...

As for how to install it, I think it's just a matter of unzipping it in the proper directory (I forgot but you can run a search for ".o" files ... I think it should be somewhere in /etc/ if I'm not mistaken) and then opening up Yast and pointing the setup wizard to the right module (the one you unpacked).

During the installation however he only reconised "Apple network controller" (or something like that), wich is my ethernet controller.

Yep. Unpack the tarball.

Lets say the tarball is in /home/dtech/downloads. Then it should unpack to /home/dtech/downloads/orinoco-015rc2 (or something like that).

Edit: The the README.txt should give instructions to possibly copy files to somewhere else, to compile, what-ever. If there is no README.txt, nor INSTALL.txt, then it gets a bit more complex to solve.

Yes, do like oldcpu says... never mind my well-meant, but slightly 'off' advice...
