I have been trying to install SuSE OSS ppc 10.0 for the last few days on both a G3 iMac, and a G4 PowerBook with no success on either. I actually thrashed the HD on the iMac and had to reinstall OS X. First problem is MD5 check fails. I burned the discs, reburned, re-downloaded then reburned, then re-downloaded from a different mirror and reburned. Each senario the MD5 check fails. So I try to continue without cheking media. When it is time to partition, I get Error -1012 cannot set hda to 102. I used my Ubuntu disc to set the partition tables, then started over with SuSE choosing to "Upgrade". This worked until I got to the boot loader, and I have the same troubles that bhagiratha is reporting in the thread before this one. Am I burning the discs wrong in Mac OS X. I have tried burning with toast 6 and with apple's disc utility.

thanks in advance for any advice

Sources:

ftp.opensuse.org
tds.net
mirrors.kernel.org

When I am in the YaST installer and the disc is being verified, there is some text in the left coulumn about MD5 checksum and it says something about using your disc burning utilities "Pad" option. I don't know that I have ever heard of the "Pad" option. I feel that I am of measurably above average experience and knowledge of OS X, but this is outright stumping me!

thanks

Does the MD5 checksum on the ISO fail before you burn a copy of the disk? If so, you have a corrupt download. If the checksum is good before you burn the disk, then the problem would be the recording drive or the media.

Code:
linux:/home/harryc/downloads # md5sum SUSE-10.0-CD-OSS-ppc-RC1-CD1.iso
694da9bcda679feaf5fd15a08ab70724 *SUSE-10.0-CD-OSS-ppc-RC1-CD1.iso
Checked md5sum against;

ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/pub/opensuse/dis...RC1/iso/MD5SUMS

Downloaded the ppc.iso from;

ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/pub/opensuse/dis....0-OSS-RC1/iso/

Give me a minute and I'll boot it up as well....

Edit; Ok the MD5SUM check fails on my Powermac G4 during RC1 YaST installation, but it passes in SUSE konsole and K3B on my x86 machine. So, this is a bug. Checking Opensuse bugs now...

Edit; Bug not found - https://bugzilla.novell.com/buglist.cgi?que...&content=MD5SUM

Recommendation; Submit bug to opensuse.org and continue with your installation as long as the MD5SUM check passes on the .iso.

OK, I tried to continue with the installation, and I get this error on both the PowerBook and the iMac.

Code:
ERROR
Storage modification failed.
System error code was: -1012
Failure occured during the following action:
Setting type of partition /dev/hda2 to 102

Does anyone know what this means? I tried several times on each Mac, and go the same error each time. I used my Ubuntu Linux install disc to partition the drive, then inserted SuSE disc 1 and chose upgrade. Installation went through until the boot loader section. I did not write the error code down (sorry), but it was unable to write to the boot partion or table or something. Again , I appologise. I am a Linux novice, but I am facinated enough with it to try to make it work. I did get Fedora CORE 4 to install on the PowerBook, but I have used SuSE under VirtualPC and I like the feel of it better. I appreciate the willingness to help from everyone who has posted.

kind regards,

There is a bug with the installer on 10.0 RC1 PPC. It does not install a bootloader. You have to run /sbin/lilo after you get the install done. Don't give up, I just got it working on my G4 Powermac, but I fought with it for several hours .

Is there a 9.x version of SuSE PPC?

**EDIT**

Scratch that.... I found the last distributed version of SuSE for the PPC to be SuSE 7.3.

I am getting this exact same problem. Very frusterating, I downloaded the iso 3 times, and wasted 5 discs on it. I REALLY want to run SuSE, as I'm fed up with Yellow Dog.

When I follow the directions outlined here:
http://www.opensuse.org/PPC_Installation_Issues
It did not work. When selecting the "Install over existing install" choice, the installation process hits an error (probably due to the lack of a pre-existing install on my machine).

When I try it normally, I also get this error:
Code:
ERROR
Storage modification failed.
System error code was: -1012
Failure occured during the following action:
Setting type of partition /dev/hda2 to 102
Any new developments? Ideas?
