Hi,

I'm new to SuSE (many years with Mandriva) and as I saw the new RC of OpenSUSE came with KDE 4 I thought I'll give it a try. I have a Dell Inspiron 9300 that comes with an ATI Radeon Mobility x300 video card. I want to install the proprietary driver but all instructions I find on the net refers to 10.3 using online repositories with a precompiled driver for that version, I can't find one for 11.0.

Also I've tried installing the driver downloaded directly from ATI, run it and opened the installation window, but the letters don't appear, I see instead empty boxes. I installed it anyway clicking the "next" button (guessing as I couldn't read any of the buttons) and it seems it installed ok. Then ran aticonfig tool to configure xorg to use the proprietary driver. At first impression everything seems to be working ok, X starts fine, but if I enable 3D acceleration using YaST and then restart X then it starts to fail. The KDM login screen appears ok, I log in and the suse loading dialog of the desktop starts, but suddenly the screen gets all black, I can just see the mouse pointer and nothing more. I can hear the desktop sounds as it had loaded ok but no video.

So any ideas of why this is happening with the driver of ATI website or is there an rpm package of the driver for 11.0 ?

Thanks in advance.
