Hello

I purchased my laptop with specs compatible with 10.3 and it worked out of the box.

I was wondering if anyone is running 11.0 on a notebook and can provide feedback on things like sleep / suspend working correctly.

Also does KDE 4 support fingerprint reader for login? From memory it did not work with 10.3 but I think that was a KDE 3.x limitation? Not sure about gnome.

I could get KDE 3.x to authenticate to yast and su in a terminal using fingerprint but not from the initial login screen.

PS - I like to suspend my laptop to RAM on lid close which works most of the time in 10.3 (sometimes have trouble getting gui back when opening).

Thanks for any info.

PPS - Dell XPS 1330

Installed RC1 last night.

All seems fine, suspend in and out of RAM on lid close / open is flawless so far.

Sound / video / wlan all working out of the box.

It is fine to my laptop. except after dist-upgrade, initrd was deleted.

I install beta3 to my laptop, konquer firefox crash frequently.

So update kde 4.04 to kde 4.1 beta1(4.08), it seems more stable now.

Funny you mention KDE problems...

I have had a great number of problems with KDE 4.0... I alwaysed used KDE 3.x with 10.3

Out of frustration I installed Gnome on this 11.0 RC1 laptop... I think I'm converted!

Yes, it is funny, i even can not open any web via firefox. Start, crash, start, crash... ...It drives me crazy.

Beteween rc1 and final, there is a version which is the bug fixed rc1. What does the "internal" mean, public can not download it?

Thu, Jun 5 openSUSE 11.0 GMC release (internal)

* Note: Depending on the number of blocker bugs that appear _after_ RC1 release, this might be public too
* Milestone: Drop of Release Notes to Localization

this might be public too, if so, it is worth waiting for a while to install this more stable version.

Hi there,

I've been running OpenSUSE 11 (B2, B3, and now RC1) for some time now. My laptop is a Thinkpad T41, and here's a list of glitches that I've bumped into:
  • KWin's desktop effects turn desktop and taskbar to black rendering it as eye candy quite useless.
  • Compiz of the other hand updates only a square area of the desktop, and window decorations occasionally work, and occasionally they don't. NOTE: Desktop's fine without any eye candy.
  • OSD worked for few days during B2, but I/updater changed something that disabled OSD. Not a big issue, since the functionality of my special keys (audio volume up/down/mute, display brightness, keyboard light) work, just without OSD.
  • Hibernation doesn't work out of the box.
  • Suspend to RAM works. Occasionally even from Thinkpad's special key (Fn+F4), I mostly do it from KPowerSave running on taskbar.
  • On resuming from suspend to RAM, KNetworkManager doesn't automatically associate WLAN to my home network's access point as opposed to what my Macbook, and Thinkpad X60s (WinXP) do when they are woken up from suspend.
  • After RC1 update, Phonon has started to display a pop-up complaining about audio hardware.
IMHO: all of these are minor issues, I could possibly get them to work with some tinkering, but I don't have time to that; family and a new quad-core desktop require some time slices as well And, after all, this is a beta system running KDE 4.0.

Hi

I agree with the eye-candy = problems comment.

KDE seems to only have issues (for me) when I turn on all the candy + nvidia drivers.

I think I will leave compiz turned off when 11.0 is released but it is nice to show Linux curious friends from time to time.

Problems I have with 11.0 RC1 + KDE 4 + compiz/latest nvidia:

Sluggish performance
Windows wont close / minimise / maximise (clicking window buttons does nothing)
No fingerprint reader support

Probably the majors for me, but as someone said it isnt released yet.

I am sure the old linux dogs would be laughing at these 'issues'. The fact that all my hardware works out of the box is worth applause.

where did you get this information? Its already June 5th, however I did not find any thing on download.opensuse.org/distribution. So if there really has a GMC release, it will not be public?

GM is Gold Master. It's an internal release so that they can check it once more before sending the image off to the DVD factory. It should be the same as the final release, maybe with a few minor discrepancies fixed. But no bug fixes. That happens afterwards with patch packages.

Dell Vostro 1700, with nVidia 8600M GT. Everything works (other than installing the nv driver manually, which will become a one-click download once 11.0 is released). Kwin performance is on par with compiz, though I'm using 4.1 which has many updates and takes advantage of Qt 4.4, I'm not sure if KDE 4.0.x in 11.0 will use 4.4 or 4.3. Suspend works. Webcam works. Wifi works. It's all good.

Cheers,
KV
