I am using the x86 KDE LiveCD of Opensuse 11.0 RC1. During the loading progress bar, it drops to the command line abruptly and gives me a login prompt. I guessed that the default login would be 'linux', and that seemed to work. There were no warnings or otherwise that I could see (other than VMware failing to start), yet X was not started. I used the command startx and it failed with some radeonhd errors (couldn't recognise my card and couldn't detect any screens).

I don't have any experience with opensuse's internals, and I only have limited experience with my GNOME Ubuntu installation, so I didn't know what to try next. Is there any way to get it to use fglrx, radeon/ati or some other driver that will at least allow me to load the LiveCD desktop? Or can I fix radeonhd?

I have an ATI Radeon X1950 PRO that boots with whatever Ubuntu uses by default and also works with fglrx on Ubuntu.

EDIT: Partially resolved. I used vi to change "radeonhd" to "vesa" in my xorg.conf (as I read that that driver would also work) and it loaded the desktop as normal. Can anyone confirm that it will be OK after I install it to the disk? Will I have to modify xorg.conf again? Can I then install fglrx to get 3D acceleration?
