I get this error message when I open Etherape as a regular user:
Error getting device: no suitable device found But after logging in as a root user it works just fine. Many thanks in advance. - Jags |

Isn't that what you would expect? I wouldn't think normal users would be allowed to read network devices. If you want to run it as root from a user desktop, then edit the properties of the launcher to run as root, and it should prompt you for the root password before starting.
