So I want to use Nvidia's 173.04.05 revision driver. The compile fails in init 3 mode in the .run sh, and I dont know how to resolve this. I see one of the most annoying bugs listed is for not compiling the old nvidia driver but it does not give instructions on how to resolve the latest nvidia driver problem.

I have GCC and make installed.

Can someone please clarify how to get the latest nvidia driver installed on RC1?

EDIT: Ok I have fixed this myself. I did not realise that I had to download the actual kernel source and not just the headers. Once I did that in yast2 the kernel module compiled no problems and sax2 configured it all to mu liking. How excellent Im totally in love with this version of OpenSuse! KDE 4 is super! super, super, totally super.

One frustration I have is that the update repos have broken validations in them and Im wasting bandwidth downloading stuff and then it fails. I think this is a Novell problem and not on my side. Hope that fix it ASAP. Lucky the kernel source rpm passed validation.

Many thanks

Well for me installing 173.14.05 is a NOGO on RC1_x64. I installed the kernel sources, the development tools and the driver build okay.

However configuring it with SAX2 does not work, it cannot start X anymore with the nvidia drvier enabled. I followed the suse instructions for configuring the driver.

This driver works fine for me on Fedora9_x64 on my Dell M65 laptop with a nvidia quadro 350.

SAX2 fails as follows:

Code:
********(II) Setting vga for screen 0.
********(**) NVIDIA(0): Depth 24, (--) framebuffer bpp 32
********(==) NVIDIA(0): RGB weight 888
********(==) NVIDIA(0): Default visual is TrueColor
********(==) NVIDIA(0): Using gamma correction (1.0, 1.0, 1.0)
********(==) NVIDIA(0): Using HW cursor
********(**) NVIDIA(0): Enabling RENDER acceleration
********(==) NVIDIA(0): Video key set to default value of 0x101fe
********(II) NVIDIA(0): Support for GLX with the Damage and Composite X extensions is
********(II) NVIDIA(0):**** enabled.
********NVIDIA: could not open the device file /dev/nvidia0 (Input/output error).
********(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA graphics device PCI:1:0:0.
********(EE) NVIDIA(0):**** Please see the COMMON PROBLEMS section in the README for
********(EE) NVIDIA(0):**** additional information.
********(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA graphics device!
********(II) UnloadModule: "nvidia"
********(II) UnloadModule: "wfb"
********(II) UnloadModule: "fb"
********(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

********Fatal server error:
********no screens found
any ideas as how to get this working?

thanks,
stefan

no clue, but it should configure fine during terminal install.

EDIT: the driver compiles fine and runs, and SAX2 activates 3D (greyed out though) but Kwin won't let me activate 3D effects.

The Nvidia drivers are a known issue in 11. Let's hope it's worked out before the final release.

Is 173.14.05 the beta drivers? I heard those work. There's also a patch available, but for the life of me, it's over my head.

This is the latest release driver, it was issued a couple of days ago.

The previous version didn't have issues with openSUSE 11 per se, it was incompatible with kernel 2.6.25, so impacted many newer distros. There was a patch as you mentioned that fixed it, but it's no longer required for this version.

Except for people experimenting with 2.6.26 Yet another patch required.

Cheers,
KV

well i am trying to get the latetst non-beta driver working but it is still a NOGO for me on OpenSuSe11rc1 on my x64 laptop. My older x86 desktop is working fine but my shiny new M65 laptop fails sax reconfiguring. That Never happened before on my quadro 350 card. I would like to have this fixed though.

I had no problem using 173.08 beta driver on the beta releases and now RC-1. Try using that driver.

What card does your laptop have in it?

Check against the "Supported Cards" list on the Nvidia site, maybe it's too new?

I didn't use Sax2 to configure mine, I used the Xconfig option that comes with the package, and all went well on my HP DV6645eg laptop (Nvidia 8400M GS).

Then you have to run nvidia-xconfig again to enable 3d effects:

nvidia-xconfig --add-argb-glx-visuals --allow-ddcci --cool-bits=1 --composite --allow-glx-with-composite --render-accel

Hope that helps

Oops, forgot to add, I'm using the driver: NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-173.14.05-pkg2. directly from the Nvidia website!

using the nvidia 173.08 beta x64 driver does indeed work for me on my quadro 350 card. silly that the beta works better then the final, but for now it is okay.

thanks,
stefan
