Unhappy

Hiya, I'm new to linux and OpenSUSE and I'm pleased I got past the installation with no hitches but now that I have OpenSUSE installed on my computer. I cannot access my wireless internet connection! :blink: I googled by booting into Windows <_< to see if I could find information on how to sort the problem but all the information that was produced by the searches on google kinda baffled me.

I know that I need find the a linux driver for my RTL8187 wireless adapter?
But don't know where to start or what steps to follow, any help is much appreciated!

One of my more productive searches produced a link to the OpenSUSE website which quoted this advice:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rtl8187
From openSUSE

Version: 10.3

Situation

You have an USB WLAN adapter that uses the Realtek 8187 (RTL8187) chipset and want to use it in OpenSuSE 10.3. However you cannot compile the kernel module, or when trying to insert the module, you get the following error message:

FATAL: Error inserting rtl8187 (/lib/modules/2.6.22.16-0.2-default/weak-updates/rtl8187.ko):
Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)

The output of dmesg is:

rtl8187: Unknown symbol eeprom_93cx6_multiread
rtl8187: Unknown symbol eeprom_93cx6_read

Procedure

You need to install 2 packages to get this to work:

* rtl8187-kmp-<kernelflavour>-<architecture>
* rt2x00--kmp-<kernelflavour>-<architecture>

After installation you should be able to get use the card by inserting the module by running the following command (as root)

modprobe rtl8187

knetworkmanager should now detect the card can connect to your wireless network.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Still extremely baffled, I also read online the driver development community may not be active and it has been only produced for OpenSUSE 10.2 so far that I know of.

I also found a version of the driver off the RealTek Website. I'll try to install it and see what happens...... :huh:

This is a relatively new driver. I've been helping another user with similar problem here. From what I've been reading online, you need to be careful about the exact version of this hardware you have. It seems there is RTL8187B hardware around as well. You can get this info from:

lsusb (will give you vendor and product ID, Google can then help with identification)
dmesg (may also yield useful info)

If you use this software search tool, and enter 'rtl8187' you will get a list of repositories offering this package. The same can be achieved via YaST if the relevant repos are enabled. The search located packages from:

http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/...SE_10.3_update/

http://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/misc/su...elh/SUSE-10.3/

http://download.opensuse.org/update/10.3/rpm/

If you choose to download them as single packages, make sure you donwload the package applicable to your kernel version.

Keep us posted with your results. It will help others too. B)
