Open a console and enter su to get rootly powers then enter iwlist scanning to see the local networks.

Open the GUI configurator Yast and --> Security and users --> User management --> Highlight your name and activate Expert Options --> Login settings: it's in there.

I will try that, I havn't had time yet, but i thought i would add one more thing. there is no knetwork manager icon by the clock, and it never comes on even if i try to start it from the Kmenu...
knetwork manager works fine on my laptop, but not on my desktop where im having problems.

thanks

The default install of networks is not to use a network manager. The default is for network cards to obtain their IP addresses automatically from routers in dsl/adsl/cable modems or other routers.

Network managers are of no use in a static home lan or a small office/home office (soho) situation. The are useful and sometimes very necessary on laptops that travel.

If you want to use knetworkmanager you have to configure to use it rather than "traditional method with ifup", in Yast --> network devices --> net cards
