To see if it's detected try this: Clear the kernel ring buffer with this command in a console: sudo dmesg -c Then plug the device into a usb port and after that enter the command dmesg. The output you get in the terminal shows what the kernel sees. For example I get this for a usb modem device (not the UTStar device, a different one): Quote:

OK that's a pantech usb modem, works for some on Linux. So open Yast --> software management and chack that the appropriate software is loaded: search for and tick to install the following: ppp, udev, smpppd, wvdial, Kinternet. Then goto Yast --> network devices --> modem --> and highlight the pantech (or pseudonym) and proceed to install it. I installed the modem I mentioned above and two other similars that way. You'll find my experiences recorded on this page in the top right hand panel listed as Modem I, Modem II and Modem III. Ask questions if it's not straightforward. Maybe i can help although it's difficult without the modem to experiment with.
Swerdna Edit: ps you'll also need to set the smpppd daemon: goto Yast --> system --> runlevels --> expert and find smpppd and set to to running=yes and runlevels 2+3+5 |

You can take a screenshot with Ksnapshot and post it on some third party site, or simply copy all the info by hand . Somehow summarise the info that you get from the Kinternet tool that shows all your settings, like this does for one of my modems: http://www.swerdna.net.au/evdoppp/evdoppp_12.png
I'd like to look at your settings. But I'm really getting in over my head here. Does your device come with any technical information? Do you have a link to it on the internet somewhere? Otherwise I'm just guessing amongst 10^4 possibilities. Swerdna |

ok im gonna pull my hair out soon
now i get the message connection to local and remote server refused maybe smpppd is not running or you are not a member of the group "dialout" |
|
|||
|
Check group membership for the username by going to Yast --> secuity and users --> user managem,ent highlight your username and click edit --> activate the details tab and confirn that dialout has a tick mark. That's likely not the problem.
Likely the problem is smpppd daemon not running, so see how to fix that in post #4 in the edit ps Swerdna |
