Hi all!

Just a quick one (hopefully!)

After months of surfing on a neibghour's unsecured wirless broadband, I've finally managed to sort out my own. My Windows XP install can connect to it with no problems, but when I boot up Linux, on the same laptop, I can't connect.

I'm using KNetworkManager, which connects to my neibghours wireless fine (it's what I'm using now!) but with my own network, it just stalls at 28%, then gives up and jumps back onto my neibghours network.

I remember reading somewhere that there is a bug in KNetowrkManager that causes this, and using Madwifi may be preferable, but due to a seperate issue (http://www.suseforums.net/index.php?showtopic=48524) I can't install it at the moment. Is Madwifi a possible fix?

Cheers peeps!

What kind of encryption do you use on your home network?

Do u know what? I haven't a clue - how embarrasing!

I got the router free with my Sky Broadband yesterday, and it was just a case of plug and go. It come with security all set up. Just type in the key (supplied with the router) when prompted and off it goes.

I have found the IP address to access it, but it is passworded, and I haven't been supplied with that information

I'm at work atm so can't look into it, but will see if I can check what the encryption is when I get home.

Cheers.

Getting stuck at a low percentage means you have not been able to associate with the WAP, usually it would be an encryption setting or password issue on the SUSE laptop. If you were used to connecting to an unsecured network, then you probably haven't set any of those settings.

Im actualy having a similar problem and what it seems like to me is that even though suse detected my wireless card correctly and appropriated the correct name to it, it is never activated, the light on it never comes on and doesnt recognize any networks im assuming its not even installed correctly at this point.....

If you can't see any networks at all, then the NIC hasn't even been activated. Unless you live in the deep of the woods, usually there are some people with WAPs running living around you.

From my XP install I found the following info:
Network Authentication WPA-PSK
Data Encryption TKIP

However, just logged onto my 10.1 SuSe install this morning, tried to connect to my network, and was prompted for my password, which I wasn't prompted for in all my attempts yesterday. Entered it, and all is fine - I'm surfing on my wireless, in SuSe. So, temporarily, it seems fixed.

No idea why it wasn't working yesterday!

Ah-ah!

Got it!

On my girlfriends user account, I was prompted for the password, and all was good, however, my on my account it seems as tho KNetwork Manager is set to use KWallet to look for the password. As I was closing KWallet before I tried to connect to the wireless, it was just giving up.

Now, how can I automate KNetwork Manager so that as soon as I boot, it automatically connects to my wireless network, and KWallet doesn't ask me for passwords. Should I bin KWallet?

I just want the laptop to connect and be ready to surf without any actions from me.

Don't use a network manager if you're not managing a bunch of networks, use instead the "traditional method with ifup". Then it will boot straight to it. See linked pic

OTOH if you need to connect in hotels and cafes, you might be stuck with a manager

Thanks for all the help.

Wireless is now up and running reliably via KNetwork Makanger, and Kwallet.

Going to keep this configuration as I just between networks quite a bit.

Cheers!
