I'm running openSuse 10.3 64-bit on a Dell D520 laptop with a built in wireless intel pro/wireless 3495abg. I can get a connection using the iwl3945 module. However It disconnects after about 20 minutes and forces me to reboot to reconnect to the network.

Any ideas to get a reliable connection?

Regards,

Michael

I've got a very similar issue, but mine happens only after I allow it to go to sleep, and occasionally when I boot up after having been booted into Windows. I've gotten around this by not letting the laptop go to sleep, but I'd love something a little bit more technical to fix it.

(BTW: I'm new to Linux, so I won't be able to offer too detailed answers, but I follow instructions well.)

Yeah, I think this is a real problem since Intel wireless pro 3495abg seems to be the most common card that comes with laptops nowadays. It would be nice if more support was given.

This is a shot in the dark, but try using Knetworkmanager to configure your wireless. It should be under System-->Desktop Applet-->Knetworkmanager.

Actually, with the 3945abg, it's better not to use knetworkmanager. There's been a couple of posts in this forum about it, basically there is a flaw in the intel driver that borks networkmanager. It is due to be fixed upstream in Intel's next release.

In the meantime, I'm in the same boat, wifi connection kept dropping regularly (although rebooting not necessarily required, simply removing and reloading the module often helped), once I configured yast -> networking to stop using networkmanager and use standard networking, it's worked like a charm. No dropped connections, no glitches, no nothing. Good stuff.

Just my 2c...

Cheers,
KV

Same problem on my Acer laptop... Certain bug reports from *insert distro name here* all point to network manager being the culprit. Weird, same driver I used w/ XP & Vista I'm using w/ Linux so I'm out of answers.

...has anyone tried adding the network manager repo and installing the gnome .7 network manager?

Yeah, I stopped using NetworkManager altogether. I had the disconnect issues in Fedora 8 and OpenSuse 10.3. In Opensuse i just unchecked the Networkmanager option in Yast and just use ifup with KInternet and all works perfectly. Of course I still run NetowrkManager without issues on my Debian Etch/Lenny laptop, but I think that is running an older version networkmanager.

Correction... looks like using Kinternet instead of networkmanager is not the answer, as I still get disconnects (though not as frequently). I'm going to try using the iwlwifi driver and networkmanager 7 and see if that helps.
