quick question from a total linux noob: does anyone know if its possible to properly install ndiswrapper while running the suse live DVD? I've got the 10.1 version and tried to follow the instructions, but some things weren't installed and I ran into errors.

basically, I want to make sure everything is going to work before I buy a new HD to install suse onto.

No, you cannot use ndiswrapper while using a live CD or DVD. Ndiswrapper needs a hard drive to copy files to and from; it can't use memory alone. Sorry.

If you have a big enough memory key im sure you could install puppy dog linux onto it and try setup the wireless on that. Im not sure though so you might want to get that checked.

I searched around and asked (and got ignored) for that information to no avail. It would be nice if you could include that information a bit more explicitly (I realise that it can be inferred from the word 'installed') in the tutorial. Where it lists the things you need:

1. An installed copy of SuSE Linux, 10.0 or greater (ndiswrapper will not work with a liveCD or DVD).

Might be helpful to people who, like Mr. Biggs and I, were trying to get things working on the LiveDVD first. Thanks for the great tutorial though.

Unhappy

I'm running SUSE 10.2 and I have followed Andrew's setup.

I have a Broadcom 4813

I can see the card, it's active, I can see the AP...when I try to connect to it, I get to 28% "Configureing Device" :blink:

That's it...it never resolves the connection. :unsure:

Any ideas?

Thanks

If you're seeing 28%, that'd be NetworkManager, which my tutorial specifically asked you to turn off. If you want to keep using it, see this thread: http://www.suseforums.net/index.php?showtopic=20527

I have a question about the make install step. I get the error message:

can't find kernel build files in /lib/modules/2.6.13-15.8-default/build;

give the path to kernel build directory with KBUILD = <path> argument to make

I have checked and kernel-source is installed, but its version number does not match. It seems to be higher. I don't think the tutorial states what to do when this happens. What should I do?

You'll need to either upgrade your current kernel or downgrade your current kernel-source package until they match.

OK, I downloaded and installed the right version from here: http://rpmfind.net/linux/rpm2html/search.p...y=kernel-source

I checked in YaST that the version was indeed installed. I still get the same error.

Can't find kernel build files in /lib/modules/2.6.18.2-34-default/build;
give the path to kernel build directory with
KBUILD=<path> argument to make

Should I have installed the version it complains about instead of the version mentioned in the instructions? I apologize for being kind of lost. In YaST, 2.6.18.8-0.1 is the available version and is the version I had previously installed.

You must be running 2.6.18.2-34-default, because that's what it's looking for. Try and find a 2.6.18.2-34 kernel-source package and install that.
