My home network consists of two Suse 10.3 machines, a laptop and a desktop with a parallel printer. Printing across the network via cups-server and client works fine, provided that both machines are on.
However, I would like to "print" on my laptop even when the (desktop and the printer) are turned off, i.e. the print should be cached locally on the laptop and start as soon as the desktop becomes available. How do I do this with cups? A similar thing works fine with the locally spooled office printers (direct network printers), but how do I do this at home for a cups-printer? |

I think in this case you have to run a real CUPS server on the client that forwards jobs to the desktop, rather than just a client sending directly to the desktop's server without storing first.
I can't give you details because I've not been in this situation, but try this: set up the CUPS software on the client to be a server, and with a local printer. When you have succeeded in doing that, set up another queue that forwards to the desktop's server, and use that. Not sure what will happen with polling, etc. You'd have to read a bit or try it and see. |
