when I disable firewall, and go to samba in the network folder I can view my windows pc just like that, but I can't seem to view my linux from my windows computer, I know in windows I have to enable file sharing to view them on the network but I don't have a clue as to what to do in opensuse, I tried looking for turtorials but can't seem to make sense out of anything, I need to transfer some files from my windows computer to linux, and then back to linux to windows( my windows PC is going to be reformated) and I don't want to go through a box a dvds or spend days transfering data with my flash drive.

Of the 4 methods discussed I selected 'DiskInternals Linux Reader' (free): http://www.diskinternals.com/linux-reader/ Runs fine and it's read only so you can't write to Linux (I would never give MS write access to Linux in any case ). Does this help you?

You could try this tutorial: A Suse/openSUSE/Windows Network Primer. But if that's too hard then consider this: Please post the contents of your configuration file (smb.conf) which you can copy to your desktop like so: suppose your user name is hilary, open a console and enter this: cat /etc/samba/smb.conf > /home/hilary/Desktop/samba.txt. Then open samba.txt and copy/paste the contents here Swerdna PS: Another thought: if you can view your windows computer from Linux, why not create a share on windows, put your data in it and copy it across. Or just share the data and copy it directly? |

I actually don't know how to do that last one, I never messed around with networks that much, I may try the disc method soon though.

I'm sorry, I had the intention of burning the program to a disc to avoid downloading it again and somehow called it the disk method without thinking, but I meant using the program the above poster gave me to access linux.
http://www.diskinternals.com/linux-reader/ well, I tried that program but its not what I wanted, that seems to allow me to view files on a linux partition I have on the same computer with windows, I have a desktop with windows and a laptop with opensuse, and I want to transfer files over the network from one computer to the other, I can read windows in samba but I have no idea how to configure or enable file sharing in linux or view linux on my windows PC, I'll look into the others methods you gave though. |

Regarding your ability to see windows already from Linux over the network, I urge you to look into creating a share on the windows computer. Just share the directory that contains the data, the WHOLE DRIVE if need be, and then from Linux you can pluck out anything you want. easy if you can already see the windows computer from Linux. To share a drive ion windows, find in in "my computer" icon and right click it select "sharing and security" then "understand the risk but still want to share ......" then "share this folder" and "allow users to change files" then "apply". well, I can share from windows to linux, I have already moved some files to my linux computer, its the transfering data from linux to windows that is a problem, since when I go to network in windows I can't see linux and have no idea what to do, it seems as the instructions you gave are to share from windows to linux, sorry if I mistaken though. What I want to do is be able to open windows network and see linux and access my shared folder/s in linux( whatever that may be).

But to get the full deal you need to create shares on tjhe Linux machine. So post the contents of your Samba configuratin file as referred too in post #3. Also look in windows at the "My Computer" icon: Right-click it and select "properties" then the Tab called "Computer Name". That shows the "Workgroup" name. What is it? So that's two things I need you to return. Swerdna |

my workgroup is MSHOME, as for the command I keep getting a Bash error, my name is admin so is there some way I am suppose to input that command because it doesn't recognize it as you put, and I did change hilary to admin.
edit, ok one time I entered it and it seemed to do nothing but at all, not even give an error, I though it did nothing but a text appeared on my desktop called samba.txt, here it is # smb.conf is the main Samba configuration file. You find a full commented # version at /usr/share/doc/packages/samba/examples/smb.conf.SUSE if the # samba-doc package is installed. # Date: 2007-12-04 [global] printing = cups printcap name = cups cups options = raw map to guest = Bad User include = /etc/samba/dhcp.conf logon path = \\%L\profiles\.msprofile logon home = \\%L\%U\.9xprofile logon drive = P: usershare allow guests = Yes security = share restrict anonymous = no domain master = no preferred master = no workgroup = Mshome max protocol = NT acl compatibility = winnt ldap ssl = No server signing = Auto [homes] comment = Home Directories valid users = %S, %D%w%S browseable = No read only = No inherit acls = Yes [profiles] comment = Network Profiles Service path = %H read only = No store dos attributes = Yes create mask = 0600 directory mask = 0700 [users] comment = All users path = /home read only = No inherit acls = Yes veto files = /aquota.user/groups/shares/ [groups] comment = All groups path = /home/groups read only = No inherit acls = Yes [printers] comment = All Printers path = /var/tmp printable = Yes create mask = 0600 browseable = No [print$] comment = Printer Drivers path = /var/lib/samba/drivers write list = @ntadmin root force group = ntadmin create mask = 0664 directory mask = 0775 [Unnamed] case sensitive = no strict locking = no msdfs proxy = no one small off topic question, is there any difference between the live cd of suse and the full install disc as far as installing on you system is, I installed the live version but should I put the full on my pc instead. |
