I am having some issues with getting a PCMCIA card working and was hoping I could get some help. First of all, I am running openSUSE 10.3 and have a SMC2532W-B PCMCIA wireless card. The wireless card is a prizm card that uses the I82365 module.

I was able to get the card working initially and everything was great. To get SUSE to recognize the card I installed the I82365 module (modprobe I82365). I then did a hardware config check and allowed the hostap to be used for the card. After configuring the card I was able to get ping the network and various other checks and confirmed the card worked. I then added the module to be opened during boot, rebooted the system, and still had no issues.

After I was able to get the card working, I soon starting getting an issue. I will mention that I did have to remove the actual PCMCIA hardware reader from the motherboard for a short period to get another hardware card working. After this, I started getting an error when trying to load the I82365 module. I do not believe removing the PCMCIA hardware caused the error because I am still getting the same error on a separate laptop that the PCMCIA card has always been installed. The error is as follows:

FATAL: Error inserting i82365 (/lib/modules/2.6.22.5-31-default/kernel/drivers/pcmcia/i82365.ko): No such device

Now, I do know that regardless of hardware, this module should be allowed to start at all times. You do not have to have a PCMCIA card present to start this module, so there is another issue that is happening. I hope someone can help me solve this issue and thanks for the help.

And just a quick note.

I did try to delete and reinstall the module, then I recompiled the kernel. I wasn't sure if that could be a problem, so I checked that and it did not help.

I have also tried to use some of the parameters when calling modprobe i82365, but I usually get an error even though I know the parameters are part of the i82365 modules. One of the errors is:

Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)

Thanks for the help.

Does anyone have any ideas at all. I am still stuck on this issue and seem to be getting no where fast. I am still at the issue where even trying to insert the i82365 module it still will not work.

One thing to add. I did end up doing a new install for other reasons and hoped I would be able to get this working at least for one try. This time around I did a complete install (all packages) of SUSE 10.3. Unlike last time (where I got i82365 working for a few boots), from the very first time I tried to use the module during this install I kept receiving the will not insert error.

If there is another way to install the SMC wlan card, I would be happy to do so. At the moment, ndiswrapper will not work and it seems I can't even use this module to get SUSE to recognize the board. Again, even things to try would be of use given where I am stuck at. Thanks for the help.

Maybe i82365 kernel module is not required. Without understanding much about the range of pcmcia tools and modules, I found this info suggesting you may not require a resource database (provided by i82365 module) for all cards.

IIRC, prism cards are supported by hostap driver, and most modern cards use yenta_socket. Have you tried wireless card configuring via yast?

I either missed describing the issue or just missed it all together, but the i82365 module is required. The card itself will use the hostap driver/module and I have been able to confirm this works, but the card reader uses the i82365 module. This is where my problem is. I will describe this more below, but thanks!

---------------------------

Ok, now it's time to update this situation a little. First of all, this problem has persisted and is now the only remaining problem I have with installing SUSE 10.3 on our system.

The problem seem to surround the PCMCIA reader more then the PCMCIA card. We have two laptops here with SUSE 10.3 installed and the same wireless cards are automatically recognized as soon as I plug them in the port. This lets me know that SUSE 10.3 is capable of using these cards. I have also been able to get the cards working during two previous times on the system (which I have been discussing and is completely different then the laptops), but soon afterwards the wireless would stop being recognized. I was able to trace this to the i82365 module.

Now let me explain what the module is for. Our system is semi-custom and uses the PCM 3115b PCMCIA card reader. Doing some research online comfirms that the driver/module for this reader is the i82365 module. During two previous installs we were able to modprobe i82365 with no errors, but after a few reboots or other changes we would start to get an error that ended with saying "No Such Device".

Most discussion on the net that talks about modules and PCMCIA readers is surrounded around kernel versions of linux before 2.6. Most people discuss editing the pcmcia file under /etc/sysconfig, but because kernel 2.6 uses pcmciautils instead, there is no such file (or no need for a file).

These are just "some" of the issues I have ran into. Either way, the issue is surrounded around the i82365 module and the fact that it is needed for my card reader to function. The card reader is installed correctly and I currently have a pcmcia card in one of the ports with the power light on (giving me the impression the card reader notices the card).

I hope someone can give me some insight. No one seems to have run into this issue with kernel 2.6 and it would be nice to start some new information and solutions on how to solve this problem. Thanks and I will be awaiting everyones responses.
