I can take a broadband device like the Sprint USB U727 and make it fucntional with OPENSUSE 10.3 through the network manger as a modem in KDE or GNOME. Verified network access by browsing, ping'n, etc....

However, KDE and GNOME do not recognize this as a valid conneciton and therefore VPN services are not available (with or without the network manager). Any ideas how to change this?

If I use a regular network connection, I can connect to my windows server pptp vpn. If I use wireless, vpn is acceble again. Using a broadband card as a modem.....not available.

I've also tried independant VPN programs and they don't recognize the connection either. However, Wired or wireless, I can VPN.

This is important for me to have as I am trying to utilize this for my traveling co-workers who are constantly on the road and need to vpn to the domain.

Anyone? the situation screams "routing issue"...but I'm not that savy with Linux yet.

Is there a specific VPN package (cisco, nortel) you are using on the windows server?

No, The windows server is setup with stock PPTP vpn service and has been functioning for the past year.

The problem is that when I use a broadband card provided by Sprint, I have to set it up as a modem under the connection manager for OPENSUSE 10.3. When I click on "Connect to MODEM0 SPRINT", a connection is made and I can surf the internet.

The problem comes when I want to VPN with this established modem connection. OPENSUSE 10.3 connection manager does not recognize a valid connection when using a modem connection and therefore "GREYS OUT" all previously confingured VPN conneciton options.

NOW, if I plug an Ethernet cable into my computer that has a valid connection to the internet. OPENSUSE 10.3 will recognize this as a valid connection and all VPN service options are available and a VPN connection can be made.

All I really need is a way to either Trick the connection manager into thinking that a valid connection is always present OR a way to force the connection manager to always keep the vpn option available.

Is no one else trying to VPN while using a broadband card? I would almost think it would be a necessity.

I've taken this to several fronts to resolve and no one seems to know why this is happening.

Any suggestions where to take it from here?

I have cisco vpn working on with my sprint broadband no problem. I use Kinternet to manage my broadband (modem) connection. This seems to give me better results.
