Hello,
I've been asked to prepare a 30-40 min lecture abuout openSuSE as operating system, the lecture should focus on : - a bit of history - maybe some interesting facts.. - how openSUSE (linux in general) deals with operating system functions (like IO devisec, memory control) - how openSUSE (linux in general) deals with system calls, processes etc. - how is openSUSE different from other linux distributions (eg. yast) , others? - why those diferences make us use openSUSE but not other linux distro - othet things which are interesting as from the view of operating system. it's quite important for me and i'd be greatful if You could help me, maybe by writing something, mayby by giving some hyperlinks to interesting resorces (including graphical).. I know, I know.. google you say. but i hope maybe you have in Your bookmarks something that would be very very difficult for me to find. thank you very much in advance. |

As for what sets it apart, I can already think of two 'examples':
1. It has a high amount of polish and has very good integration with KDE and between components. For example, when downloading something in Firefox, you can launch a file manager from within the download dialog box. Except that in most distributions, pushing the button did nothing! Whereas OpenSUSE does the correct thing. 2. A large repository of the latest software. For example, when the next version of Wine comes out, I can be sure to find an RPM in the OpenSUSE Build Service within a couple of hours from the announcement on the WINEHQ homepage! 3. This point might be subjective, but overall, I found OpenSUSE to be much more stable than other distros, especially when using the latest packages for software products. I'd start here: http://en.opensuse.org/Welcome_to_openSUSE.org
In the upper right search box, type "yast" for example; it's all there Repeat the searches for other functional areas Have you installed openSUSE? If so, install Firefox; then, the Novell & SuSE links are on the toolbar Get the history from Wikipedia. Your Tech questions are probably answered @ http://www.novell.com/documentation/opensuse103/ in the various "docs" You may want to post on the openSUSE mailing list & get the Developers to pitch in: http://en.opensuse.org/Communicate |
