I've got a Suse DVD from Novell...I think it's V10.1...but it could possibly be V10.0 (I'm at work). I installed it on an old P4 box, and liked it so much that I'm putting together a new box just for Suse, hoping she'll like me so much that I can leave Windows forever and live in freedom with her...

However, I notice that there are newer versions of Suse out (10.3 is the latest, apparently). Since I'm going to be reinstalling anyway, should I get the newer version? I'd really rather not bother ordering a new DVD (and I will not download it...I had so many bad experiences downloading disk images that I'd rather pay for a DVD).

So the question is, what are the differences between older versions of Suse and 10.3? Is 10.3 so much better that I should wait and order media for the newer distro? Moreover, I've seen no information about how to upgrade from 10.1 to 10.3...is this possible? It seems to me that it should be, yet I've discovered no way to do this via the GUI. Obviously, I'm a rank beginner...so please forgive my naive questions.

Welcome to the forum, Stolypin!

Some info on SUSE and openSUSE can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SUSE and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenSUSE if you want a good history lesson.

http://en.opensuse.org/Concepts is enlightening, as well as http://www.novell.com/documentation/...103/index.html for some in-depth documentation.

If at all possible, you may wish to go with the openSUSE 10.3 version of the software. You can read about some of the included applications at http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=suse and if you want to order DVDs, some place such as http://www.osdisc.com/cgi-bin/view.cgi/pro...?ad=distrowatch might fit your budget. However, http://software.opensuse.org/ is still available if you cared to give the ISOs another try.

Good luck, and please post back with any further questions.
