Ive been using Fedora on my laptop and server for a while now, but i dont have time to setup the mp3 librays, flash, java etc... every time i reinstall.
I had heard good things about openSUSE so ive got the latest release installed on a Vitrual machine in fedora. i jsut have a few questions about openSuse before i switch or decide not to. 1. When i looked at the package repos i nitcide that the DVD was the only one.... so where does it download updates from? or was it just because i ballsed up the VM network settings that it didnt add it? 2. Will my evolution settings calendars, contacts, tasks etc... be compatible with the evo in openSUSE? 3. My laptop is a HP compaq nx6325 with a broadcom wireless card (the fun) in fedora ive treid multiple times to get it to work having no success, is openSUSE any better at broadcom or will be restricted to the wired still? If theres anything else you think i need to know please don't hesitate to tell me. |

Welcome to the forum, Arcath!
As for package repositories, check out http://en.opensuse.org/Package_Repositories http://en.opensuse.org/Additional_Ya...e_Repositories http://software.opensuse.org/search http://opensuse-community.org/Restricted_Formats/10.3 for starters. For me, pretty much everything I use is on the DVD. I use the update repository, but not much else. I believe the Evolution will be the same, especially with IMAP. I am not familiar with the wireless, but I am sure someone will be along shortly to share more info with you. Being new to openSUSE, you may also with to check out http://en.opensuse.org/Concepts and http://www.novell.com/documentation/...103/index.html for educational purposes. Good luck, and please post back with your experiences. |

yeah thanks. i have been using linux in general for a couple of years i started with ubuntu but didnt find the experiance pleasent its too "n00bed up". Fedora is good but as i said i had problems using it as a standard desktop, no server apps, no specialised programs just office a few games and the abillity to play mp3s and DVDs.
I am just backing up everything from my laptop at the moment, when i went from windows to fedora i forgot to back some stuff up, and lets just say school without any coursework is all ways fun. I only really want the repos for securitys updates and bug fixes, also so i dont have to have the DVD with me incase i have to isntall a package. As for the wireless the switch for the house is under my desk, and the wireless is sooo far away. so i just put cable in on my desk for my laptop |

Arcath,
I was glad to read you had a smooth install. With your previous knowledge of other distros, feel free share your experiences with openSUSE in comparison. I have not used openSUSE GNOME that much. I have a better experience with KDE and Xfce. You have probably already noticed the slight differences openSUSE brings to GNOME. Have fun, and please keep us updated. |
