Is libffmpeg legal in the United States. If not, is there a way to recompile it so that offending code is removed?

Looks like it is a grey area where most distros fall on the side of it probably being illegal due to certain codecs.

You could probably compile from source with only the codecs you need that are GPL'd but I'm just guessing there.
