When using Yast it doesn't give me the most up to date kernel and be very hard compiling it.

If you dont know how to compile it, chances are you dont need it. Keep in mind, there are lots of people still using 2.4 kernels. The kernels suse distributes through YOU are plenty up-to-date.

You can find development kernel rpms in the Mantel branch of the apt repositories. I'd just stay with the stock kernels though, unless you're positive the new kernel resolves an isssue.

Remember... the most up to date kernel is not always the best kernel. In the 2.6 series there have been a few that broke things for a bit. CD writing as a ordinary user comes to mind with (I think) 2.6.8 generic kernel.org kernel.

SuSE often backports things from a later kernel to their kernel, so running a 2.6.8 SuSE kernel, may have 2.6.10 kernel.org stuff in it already. Plus SuSE often adds patches and drivers not found in the kernel.org kernels (that can be good and bad ) I think there are/were some reiserfs patches not in the regular kernel tree for instance.

Bottom line... If you want the latest and greatest... If you want cutting edge... be prepared to bleed from time to time. Unless I *know* the kernel.org kernel gives me something I truly need that the SuSE kernel doesn't, I'll stick with SuSE's.

Good luck!

That's right BigShell, but nothing beats to see your computer compiling a kernel for 30 minutes, nice stress test.
Just for fun and to learn a little about the entire process I took the time last night and compiled the 2.6.10 kernel. The options you have are almost overwhelming. I haven't installed it yet and probably won't.

Well, ok... I haven't compiled a kernel in a while, but I do remember my first time... ahhh... the memories... but I digress. We were speaking of kernels, right?

You need to boot it! So far you let the machine have all the fun. That *feeling* comes when it actually makes the monitor glow and show the letters you type and do as you command it!... I'm digressing again.

Compile, use, have fun... and keep the SuSE kernel in your /boot/grub/menu.lst just in case!
