I'm running a K8V SE Deluxe, myself, based on the K8T800 chipset. Works fine... I use my SATA drive on the VIA SATA module, and no problems yet... unless of course, transfer speeds faster than PATA is a problem...

That overclocking thing is FINE. It's NORMAL. Any time the system hangs, has an error, or has its CMOS stuff acting a little wierd (which would be the case in a NEW mobo), it says that. It's FINE. Even if you didn't overclock it. It's FINE.

Just enter the BIOS, hit save (unless you really want to change something), then reboot. Blam.

I'm using an MSI K8T NEO-FIS2R with VIA K8T800 chipset, Athlon64 3700+. Sound was flaky at first but seems to be working OK now. VIA SATA works perfectly. I have 2 Seagate 120's (non-raid) dedicated to 9.1 Pro. I have a WD200SE on IDE3 (Promise controller) that Suse cannot see at all. So that's my WinXP64 Beta drive. When I want to boot to Windows (only so I can keep my Quicken updated), I use the Boot manager in the BIOS (F11).

System seems quite a bit less responsive and sluggish in Linux than in Windows but that's from a newbie so I really can't say. Still can't access my Zip Drive (IDE2/Slave) as the device is "NOT A BLOCK DEVICE". I'm workin' on that one though.

while i would usually recommend any asus board since i think they are one of the best out there, i wouldnt recommend the a8v.* last night i tried putting one together with an athlon 64 3800+, boot it up, and the lady tells me "system failed due to cpu overclocking."* no post, no bios, no display, nothing.* this was a brand new processor and everything.* after researching the net for solutions to my problem i noticed that this problem is not all that uncommon.* i just sent the board back for an MSI so we'll see how that does.
Which version of the ASUS bios are you running on your A8V? I went through the same problem on a A8V that I purchased only a few weeks ago. However, a review of some other forum threads revealed that an update to version 1007 (vs the 1006 which apparently comes with almost all off-the-shelf boards to date) will solve the problem. You probably have two memory cards installed on the A1/B1 slots, and this will cause the problem until the bios is updated. Or run with just one memory card installed.

I'd also recommend a nForce motherboard.

- MSI "K8T NEO2-F" VIA K8T800 Pro Chipset Motherboard for AMD Socket 939 CPU

- SOLTEK "SL-K8TPro-939" VIA K8T800 Pro Chipset Motherboard for AMD Socket 939 CPU

These 2 boards seem to have very high reviews.

From a true newbie..

I've been messing around with Linux for a few years, but strictly GUI. I started with SuSE 7.3, moved to 8.0 then learned enough to do a FTP installation.

I recently built a 64bit box (first time ever!) with...

Asus K8V
AMD64 +2800
1gb PC3200
(2) WD800JD SATA
GeForce 5200 8xAGP

I did a FTP of SuSE 9.1 (x86_64) over the weekend and it went 100% problem free. It detected all my hardware and everything (with the exception of the wheel on my USB mouse) works perfectly. AND it FLYS!!!

seems i forgot about this post...in response to those few posts about the a8v, i have tried every configuration with memory and drives to no avail...the overclocking thing is NOT normal for one because it wouldnt post, so i was not able to even enter the bios what so ever...anyways, sent the board back for a gigabyte and it works fine...

Can anyone provide any guidance on A64 motherboard upgrades? I will be going from an Asus K8V (VIA chipset - K8T800) to an MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum (Nforce 3 chipset). Do I have to reinstall SuSE? Any way around that? Thanks for your time.

I have an ASUS K8V-X now, and I'm running SuSE 9.2 Pro just fine in 64-bit. Is there a reason you want to move to an Nforce-based board? I've had nothing but headaches with Nforce (in both Linux and MS Windows).

On the reinstall question: no. I moved from an MSI NeoFSR to my ASUS and all I had to do was reboot. SuSE redetected all the new devices and onboard chipset just fine.

Thanks for the reply, it's good to know that I will have one less OS to reinstall. I'd assume that Fedora would also behave accordingly, and XP .... well who knows. It is usually hit or miss. As far as why the upgrade, I torched my Asus K8V during an attempted card reader install (long story) and I wanted to go socket 939 anyway. I have read alot of good things about the MSI K8N and linux, I'll definately let you know though. My last board was Nforce2 and I liked it alot.
