Ok, I've been resisting upgrading from 8.1 - you all have convinced me to go for it.

So, how painful is the upgrade - what major steps involved? Do I need to wipe my drive or will it upgrade over 8.1?

Thanks,

hi,
From what I've heard, most people are urged to do a fresh install.Within 20 minutes to an hour you should have it installed and ready to go.

I'm still waiting for mine to come................ I'm running 9.1, so it's not like I'm far behind. But I'm really excited about all the new features for laptops!

pwbeninate,

I just got 9.2, have a LapTop -- been running since 9.1 Pro -- and would like to know what features you are talking about concerning Notebooks.

I still have to run my Linuxant Drivers for both Dial-Up and Wireless.

I'm not trying to put a damper on your enthusiasm, but I'm just curious what you heard.

Dose the wireless 2200bg work strait from the box or do you have to mess with the settings.
2200BG works right out the box. No problem.

Linuxdude,

What's your wireless card / adapter? I think I'll need to buy it.

Can someone point me at an online doc that explains the clean install procedure?

Thanks,

I have it running on a compaq X1000, 512MB, with a centrino (Intel 2200? wifi card, I think)

It works GREAT! I get better signal than with the linksys 11b card or the linksys 11g cards.

A fresh install is when you reformat and/or reallocate the partitions. I would recommend that you create a 3-10GB system partition, a swap partition (I use 256-512mb) and give the rest to /home. I find that if I give 10GB to / I have plenty of expansion room for installations, etc.

By allocating a partition to /home, you can upgrade later and not touch the /home area, thus leaving your files alone.

BTW, this is standard practice in most Unix shops. (ie to keep the / system, /var, /usr on their own partitions and in some cases, allocate a partition to each major application.) It works at home too.

My only irritation is that if I right click on the desktop, I can't open a terminal from there any more...(gnome)

Oh well.

It is basically starting the install process, choosing New Installation and then having Suse format the hard drive towip everything out before install.
