Acording to the licensing, MP3's are now panteded.
All the free Linux encoders for Linux state this and do not have MP3 options. Am I out of luck with Linux for creating MP3's on my music. I would like to be able to play them not only on my PC, but other MP3 players that I have. I know for Windows there are programs that have the licensing like Music Match, are there any Linux programs, even pay ones that can rip to MP3? Thanks in advance... |

MP3's have always been under patent or at least the better part of a year or so AFAIK. That is one reason why I am converting my collect to ogg vorbis. That and the quality is better. As for encoding, you should be able to use Grip to encode it to mp3 format.

I have several of my Artists recorded to ogg.
But every time I try to convert to MP3 it says I have encode file format wrong errors. I have googled the web and cannot seem to find any help on what to program into the fields. Does anyone know and sites that can provide help for some one not familiar with programming languages? Thanks |

It's quite simple to do with Grip and under the help tab on the application window is a link to the website, though some of us have problems with it crashing.

In Suse 9.0 I am using Konqueror to do this. I pop in the CD, enter "audiocd:/" in the Konqueror address bar, then drag the virtual mp3s to a folder on my hard drive, and they are automagically created. You might have to install "lame" to have this functionality, but I can't remember if this is the case or not.
