When loading the "boot" screen in Suse 9.1 the resolution is at 800x640. I think it's because during install I didn't choose 1024x768 resolution and so now it's defaulted at 800x640. Is there any way I could bump up the resolution to the ideal 1024x768 after install? here is the screen that I'm talking about...

Thanks!

Is it just the resolution of the boot screen that you want to change, or is your KDE screen also at the 800x600 resolution?

KDE screen is set at 1024 and it's working fine. It's just my boot screen that is still set at 800x600. And so yes it's just the boot screen that I like to change the resolution.

Thanks for replying back.

Then you'll have to set the frame buffer resolution using the "vga=" boot parameter. What are the contents of your /boot/grub/menu.lst file? Does it have a vga=0xNNN line, where NNN is some hexadecimal number? You'll have to change that NNN to a number that stands for the 1024x768 resolution. You can see a list of all modes and their numbers from /usr/src/linux/Documentation/fb/vesafb.txt -- you have your kernel sources installed right? For example, for a 1024x768 mode with 64K colors, you'd use vga=0x317. But it'll work only if your bios supports that mode.

I tried what you suggested and although it did increase the resolution to what I requested, the background colors are now gone and all I can view is black in the background while the information in text is shown.

Any idea as to why this is the case?

I am not sure why that's the case, but maybe you can try the other choices in the table -- the ones with 256 or 32K colors? Maybe your computer couldn't handle that mode properly or something. I am just guessing here.

I have a related problem that is odd. I have a laptop with a 1024x786 default res. screen and it is sometimes docked to a 17" LCD whose default res. is 1280x1024. If I boot up in the dock, that boot screen is perfect, out of the dock it still stays at 1280x1024. I suppose I can't have my cake and eat it too, but I'd have guessed that Suse developers would have figured that users would be booting up different displays. Interesting thread. I have no idea how to fix this problem or if it can be fixed. The funny thing is it just effects the boot screen. I have installed many distros in this rig and I don't recall this issue occuring before.
