Hi everyone,
My 13 year old son has used Windows based PCs for years for playing games. A few days ago I handed him a CD of personal SUSE and told him he wasn't a real geek because all he did was play games. I told him if he really wanted to be a geek he needed to install SUSE and figure out how to use it. He did it!!! Amazing. Now he wants to know more about SUSE and how he can learn to modify the code himself. He's probably not ready for that, but I would like your suggestions on books to teach him more about SUSE. He doesn't need an installation manual, he needs something a little deeper. He reads at a 17 year olds level. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you. |

Have him browse through this board. There is so much information on this board, it's incredible. Unfortunately, the personal edition is limited in it's functionality, so what he can do will be limited. I believe that the professional retail version comes with manuals about the product.
Good luck, and they're never too young to start!

O'Reilly's "LPI Certification in a Nutshell" is an excellent book, plus prepares you to take the LPIC101 and LPIC102 tests to get certified as a Linux Professioanl.
It explores the console command, not the GUI, as the GUI is self explanitory. As for modding the kernel, if he wants to get really in depth, check out O'Reiily's "Understanding the Linux Kernel". But to agree with the above post, reading forums and just good old fashinoed experimentation is good too. Check out http://www.linuxquestions.org -myk |

Linux for dummies 5th Ed, I'm always recommending that. Good and easy to understand, authough talks little about SuSE.

Unfortunately there aren't any books out specific to SuSE (well there is one I found but for a really really old version of SuSE).
If you want a superb tutorial on operating Linux/Unix systems, a great book to look at is UNIX Made Easy by John Muster. It's used by many schools for teaching *nix operation, walks you through step by step and does a fantastic job of explaining everything without leaving a puzzled look on your face. |
